Elite is an adult learning center franchise specializing in English-related subjects. I work amongst the 7 Taipei branches. The Elite head office decides on the curriculum and syllabus, but branch offices develop the class schedules. Classes are scheduled from 1-10 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. They are either 1 1/2 or 2 hours in length, arranged by level (1-6) and either 12 or 24 lessons in length. Classes have no official start and stop dates and can be opened, closed, rolled over or terminated based on attendance. Students attend (drop-in) classes voluntarily at their own pace choosing their subject, course, level, lesson, teacher, time and location. Since classes are recreational there is no administering of homework, quizzes, or tests. I only function as a teacher, with no other assigned responsibilities.

Lincoln Elementary School is a private bilingual elementary school that offers day care, preschool, kindergarten, elementary (1-6), and after-school programs. The school offers both a bilingual and English-only curriculum. The school operates from 8:00 to 6:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, year round, on a 26-week schedule that includes winter/summer camps between semester breaks. Foreign teachers are peripatetic in nature and are assigned desks in the main office. Schedules (times, classes, breaks, and prep-time) vary by semester, age and program. During my time with them I have taught all grades and subjects offered by the school. Beyond teaching, I was involved in parent teacher conferences, parent demos, assemblies, field trips, sports days, graduation and award ceremonies, graduation and Christmas plays, school-wide competitions, year-books and DVDs. I also have participated in curriculum development, from the selection of books, science experiments and art projects, to worksheet and test development, to the content used in shows and camps.

Cambridge is a private bilingual school that follows a western K-12 curriculum. Cambridge has separate kindergarten, elementary, middle and high school facilities on their campus grounds. The elementary school day operates from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Homeroom is held at 8 a.m. and classes begin at 8:30 a.m. The days are organized into 8 blocks a day, with 2 blocks each day (except Wednesday) reserved for teacher preparation and meetings. The classes are 45 minutes long with alternating 7.5- and 15-minute breaks between blocks. In addition, the school operates year-round with winter/summer camps between semester breaks. Each teacher has 4 classes 4 times a week for 2 consecutive blocks. The semester syllabus and exams are established by the school. The individual teaching schedule, homework and quizzes are established by the teachers with a minimum requirement of 8 quizzes and 16 homework assignments being administered for report cards/marks for an approximately 20-week semester. I was assigned my own classroom, and the students came to my room for specific subjects.

Hanyin Group (Canada & Abroad)

Teacher & Tutor (Middle and Secondary school grades)
Summer Camp Co-coordinator (three times in 2004, 2005, 2006)

Teachable Subjects: Middle and High School Curriculum, all subjects including English/ESL)

Internationally the Hanyin Group operates private schools (modified K-12 curriculum), afterschool and intersession programs, educational consulting services and boarding services. In Canada, Hanyin focuses on the K-12 curriculum and prepares local and international students for university with their afterschool programs that consist of classes in a formal classroom setting, informal class tutorials, and individual tutoring. My time with Hanyin was divided 60:20:20 between classroom, tutorial, and tutoring respectively. Hanyin’s classroom curriculum is replicated, based on students’ textbooks and syllabi, and taught during evening classes with their class schedules following the Canadian fall, spring and summer school semesters. I began in the arts teaching social studies, followed by geography, history, and law 12, but eventually, I almost completely transitioned over to the sciences. I taught science (8, 9, and 10); physics, math, and chemistry 11 & 12; and calculus.

General Classroom Setting: Subject classes are arranged once a week and are two hours in length. Classes run weekdays, Monday through Friday, between 6 and 10 p.m. Classes and sizes vary depending on demand each semester, but are no smaller than 5 and can run into the twenties. Homework, quizzes, practice midterms and finals are provided to the students for practice and communicated to parents in progress reports.

General Class Tutorials/Tutoring: Class tutorials are similar to open or drop-in tutorials; a teacher situated at a desk surrounded by students working at their own pace with students who have encountered problems queuing for assistance. Class tutorials and individual tutoring follow the same schedule (5 days, 6-10 p.m., 2 hours). The only exception is that individual tutoring can be arranged on weekends.
