Community Field Experience

During my time in the Teacher Education Program at the University of British Columbia I was permitted to assume the role of a Teacher Librarian at Gladstone Secondary in the Grandview-Woodland neighborhood of Vancouver.  Because of my desire to be a teacher I jumped at the opportunity to assume a role in the community of a school that precluded a classroom. I believe that it can be easy for a teacher to become accustomed to the walls of a classroom and oblivious to the environment they are a part of. The opportunity to connect with students, teachers and administrators in a role unfamiliar to me that was central to a student’s education was priceless. A library can represent a second home to some a student which is full of resources and friends.

Gladstone

My time at Gladstone consisted of a memorable 2 years in length. I believe that the perspective gained from a Teacher Librarian’s vantage point on education was valuable to my career. The following entries consist of a summary of my experience and my daily journal kept.
