With summer on its way we are getting ready for another busy intake season at the Okanagan Region Historical Digitization Project!
Our team of students has been hired, and we are fortunate to welcome back Emma, Eamon, and Sharon for another semester. Our fans will recognize them due to their incredible work with us throughout the last year. From May to August, Allison Jones will be joining the team full-time from UBC Vancouver’s MAS/MLIS co-op program as our Graduate Project Assistant.
Over the past few months you may have noticed more content going up on the Digitized Okanagan History Arca repository. If you haven’t, now’s the time to check out our materials there and get excited for the influx of new photographs, documents, and (new this year!) newspapers that will be added throughout the summer.
We’re also literally gearing up this summer, and have new equipment set up at our UBC Okanagan base that will allow us to digitize large format items, microfilm, and audio cassettes. For the tech heads reading this, we’ve now added a HP Designjet 4500 Scanner, a Scarlett 2i2 audio interface, a Pyle PT-649D Dual Cassette Deck, and a Konica SL1000 Digital Microfilm Scanner to our equipment roster.
In the coming months, we’ll be bringing more materials from our partner repositories to UBC to make use of these tools, and doing fewer site visits than in 2017. Many of our present (and future) partners will also be coming to visit us for a Summit Meeting on June 1, 2018, during which we’ll be providing updates on the project’s progress and some new and exciting future plans. We’ll be sure to post a recap of the highlights of that day on the blog afterwards, so stay tuned!
