As a member of the ALSS Social Council this past year, I had the pleasure of helping plan and organize the annual Tricycle Race (or Trike Race as it is affectionately known).

The Trike Race, sponsored by Farris, is a longstanding tradition at Allard. It dates all the way back to 1972! (Although much has changed since those early years)

Each year, those students tasked with organizing the event choose a theme. This past y

Trike- Gradear’s theme was Mario Kart, and previous years’ themes have also included Saved by the Trike and Jurassic Trike. Teams show great spirit by dressing up in silly costumes as they face off against one another and battle it out for the timeless title of Trike Race Champions and everlasting recognition on the coveted trophy.

Trike Race takes place just beyond the doors of Allard Hall. This past year we raced up and down Crescent Road, across from the school’s main entrance. Students and faculty sign up for the race in teams of four and one at a time each member of the team must chug aglass of non-alcoholic beer before running to the starting line, mounting their tricycle, and racing to the other end of the course. But there’s a twist, racers must navigate the course as onlookers shoot them with water guns, bombard them with water balloons, and dump buckets of water on them from the sidelines.

This event receives widespread support from students and faculty alike, and is without a doubt the most highly anticipated event of the year. TrikeRace takes place at the culmination of spring classes and is a terrific way for both students and faculty to celebrate the end of term together and unwind before April exams. The race is followed by a Friday Social, complete with awards ceremony, where participants can socialize and enjoy food and refreshments.

We are thankful to Farris and the ALSS for keeping this tradition alive!
