To what extent do these UBC systems communicate with outside systems? For example, my “gravatar” is showing up here spontaneously. Does that indicate some connnection with non-UBC services and databases?

gravatar is probably the notable exception in a sense that is done automatically – you can also turn it off.
there are other services that WP can connect via APIs but they are not turned on automatically. What exactly do you have in mind?

I’d like to be able to “see” the system connections where my presence and content show up. (A virtual space obscures the low-tech property of legible connections.) There may be an interesting issue of technology culture here: should it be up to me to ask the right questions to determine where my content and presence occur, or should I always assume anything I post online can and will be propagated, possibly immediately, and definitely beyond my control?

there are many ways to achieve this and if you for example choose to use UBC blogs as your aggregator you can immediately publish within your blog any of your other web exposures, like link on delicious, flickr photos or youtube video
