CONCEPT STATEMENT
A PLACE TO LAND: Reflecting the rhythms of local wildlife and rapid growth of the Oakridge neighbourhood, our design is inspired by migration. As birds and other native fauna face dwindling habitats, our park provides them with the conditions they need to forage, nest, and recover. At the same time, it invites people of all ages to escape the urban hustle, creating space to slow down, unwind, and play. After a long journey, or a long day, this park provides humans and non-humans alike with a place to land.

Reflecting the multicultural composition of the community and cyclical movements of the region’s wildlife, our design is rooted in the concept of migration. Amidst ongoing densification of the Oakridge corridor and alarming biodiversity decline, the new Columbia Park reclaims habitat for native flora and fauna while serving as an inclusive gathering space for rest and play. It balances the city’s increasingly urbanized nature by serving as an urban oasis, creating a space that celebrates and enhances (bio)diversity.
