Links to Practice

Over the course of my long practicum, I will use the following three strategies to apply my classroom knowledge to my inquiry question:

1. Students will have the opportunity to write in reflection journals.

The goal of this exercise is to give students the chance to share some of their personal experience, background, and thoughts on physical education. Students will be able to write in their journals twice each month; this timeline will allow me to read their comments and incorporate some of their feedback into my future lessons and units.

2. I will incorporate the TGFU and Sport Education Model into my units and lessons.

I will be starting my practicum by incorporating the TGFU model into a unit on net/wall games. By breaking down the game of pickle ball into a series of mini-games based on specific skills, students will be exposed to a new type of instruction. Similarly, I will use the Sport Education Model when teaching territory/invasion games. This teaching method will place more ownership and responsibility on the students for their individual learning; this is not something they are familiar with and my goal is to inspire creative learning through this teaching strategy.

3. Students will participate in physical, team-based challenges (similar to those of La Sierra High School in the 1970’s).

Similar to the old-school fitness routines made popular in the 70’s, it is my aim to incorporate team-cantered fitness into the classroom. Each week I will have a new team fitness challenge circuit for the students to complete. They will engage in competitive tasks such as prowler pushing, agility ladders, push up variations, and jumping challenges. These challenges can also take the form an an “Amazing Race” type of adventure. My goal in doing this is to foster a positive class environment based on overcoming difficulties as a collective group. This has proven to be very successful in the past and I believe I can use a similar approach on my practicum.
