There Will Be No Pipeline?

Overwhelming news in regards to the Northen Gateway Pipeline project conducted by Enbridge, Inc. has pop up in front of us. It is so controversial that both sidesĀ  stand comfirmedly on their own opinions—environment concerns and huge economic interests.

The conflict between environment problem and the economic interest is always a controversial topic nowaday. It’s not straight forward for Enbridge to get this far, but the main controdiction right now is that the First Nations insist that any economic benefit from the pipeline is not worth the risk of a spill on the waterways in their tradition territory, while tremendous benefits of northen gateway pipeline attract douzens of companies and industries. What’s more, as more and more public outcry come out from the widespread of opposition voice, Enbridge decided to make equity sharing agreements with 26 of the 40 First Nations. However, it still doesn’t reach the consequence as they want.

The reason why Enbridge invest 7.9 billion dollars and so many vigors on this project is tremendous benefits—not only for one company but also for oil companied in western Canada, oil refinery companies in Asian and the broad customers in Asia and Pacific Region. It’s social-economic trends and revenue attractiveness that push Enbride to conduct the project. But the First Nations, as one of the most important stakeholders, also play a crucial role in business. So, I think, Enbridge Inc should come up with an idea to deal with the contradiction between First Nations and the project before any substantial actions. For example communicate with the experts of First Nations and let them be the bridge between the company and the First Nations.
