Welcome!

Welcome to my ePortfolio!  This website showcases my work made during BIOL 420, Ocean Conservation and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia.

Throughout this course we have explored a myriad of ocean conservation topics, working our way through the “onion world”.

The onion world is an approach created and used by Dr. Amanda Vincent to implement sustainable solutions to ocean issues.  The idea being, if you want to save a certain fish, you must consider the ecosystem where the fish live. But to protect the ecosystem, one must work with the fishers operating within the ecosystem.  Accordingly, to influence the fisher one must engage with their community to understand the social and economic pressures effecting the fisher.  To change a community, it is crucial to understand the larger regional pressures. At this scale, regional pressures are often closely tied to national politics.  Finally, before attempting to change national policy, one must consider international trade and global politics.  Following this logic, we see that it is impossible to make sustainable change in the world without considering all layers of the onion.

Throughout this course we have produced work touching on every layer of the onion, and I have uploaded some select projects and snippets to this website.  Enjoy!
