To reach a broad audience, it’s important to communicate in ways that are engaging and digestible. For this class we practiced this by making haikus and tweets about ocean issues we were discussing at the time. Specifically, we were discussing how fishing continues to escalate in stocks of unknown health.
For example, my haiku is accompanied by a photo of an abandoned fishing boat in Nova Scotia with a fishing license for 1976-78 (before the notorious cod collapse). Prior to the cod collapse the DFO thought the stock was doing fine, since the amount of fish landed remained stable. On the right, my tweet cites a graph illustrating that the health is unknown for 1/3rd of Canadian fish stocks.
