How to create an effective group?

Throughout commerce courses, students are always divided into different groups and required to work as a team. During last lesson, our professor asked us to share our own good and bad experience when we were working in a team. From those good experience, I found out that good team generally has the following specific characteristics.

Firstly, every member in the team participates in the group discussion and shares their own ideas with each other. A good team always has an open communication. It is also mentioned in chapter 6 of the textbook. It states that open communication is one of the most important characteristics of creating an effective team. Open communication allows team members feel free to express their feelings on the tasks as well as on the group’s operation. This will not only create a harmony working environment, but also improve the effectiveness in a team. secondly, every member is able to come group meeting on time and does their job properly.

However, in my opinion, as a good team member, it is not enough to only do well in our own parts. It is also very necessary for us to help others in a team, which is related to citizenship behaviour. Citizenship behaviour is a person’s voluntary commitment within an organization. All things being equal, a team whose team members who exhibit citizenship behaviour will perform better than one whose members don’t. It means that if all the members are willing to make effort by helping others. This will bring benefits to both our team and ourselves.

In conclusion, it is time for us to stop thinking about just finishing and completing our own parts of work, the success of a team as someone else’s responsibility. This is our mutual responsibility to achieve success. As a result, it is time for every member in a team to manage our time properly to help other group members who needs help.
