Hooks

Hooks for class

  • Instruct students to analyze a Photograph on the slide
  • Instruct students to play Chess, Scramble, Puzzles, etc. for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Instruct students to sit or stand as prefer for Meditation (deep breathing)
  • On a Monday class or after a long weekend, it’s always advisable to start class with general discussion. Ask students to discuss among themselves for 5-10 minutes, after time-up, any student can share their discussion with the general class. Keep in mind the introverts in class, do not call on students, ask for volunteer to share.
  • I like using animae videos for hooks. Asking students to analyze what they watch and what lesson can be learnt from the video.

INQUIRY PROJECTS

Situation Analysis:

Situation 1:

You are the marketing manager of Apple Retails, Tamanawis. During an executive meeting yesterday, you were informed that the company is facing financial problems. But the life of the company depends on a new product that will start production this Fall. The product is a Television that can also be use or serve as a security camera. As the marketing manager, you have been tasked by the company’s president to make sure that you and the marketing team lunches the Television in the market and make sure the Television is sustainable in Surrey market for a very long time or the company will bankrupt.

What will you do to make sure the Television have a sustainable competitive advantage in Surrey market? Advise the company on what have to be done, should the company continue with the production or not produce the Television and file for bankruptcy protection? Should the company target only Surrey or move beyond to the whole of BC? How about the price? Will it be cheap or expensive considering that the production cost is very high, that is, it will cost the company $1200 to produce one Television.

Situation 2:

As the marketing manager of a Tamanawis Taxi company, you have been asked to advise the company whether it is reasonable for the company to lower its passenger’s fees or increase its fees. The reason is because the company is facing bankruptcy because of low passengers and too much competition from rivals. If passenger’s fare is too cheap, there is the possibility that Tamanawis Taxi Company will be making a loss in the business, which may be difficult for the business to survive. But if it increases fare, passengers might not want your Taxi on the street.

What will you do to help bring your Taxi Company from bankruptcy to profit? Outside price, what other competitive advantages can be done to make profit?

Situation 3:

Your group own Tamanawis Tours Ltd, based here in Surrey. Your group is thinking of expanding business into the winter sports services and plans to build a skating, ski and hockey arena next year. It will be better to build the arena in Surrey because it is close to your homes and schools. But considering the business will not make profit and you cannot get enough resources to operate the business because there is no regular snowfall in Surrey, will you continue with your plan? If yes, why? If No, why?

To take competitive advantage of geographical location, where do you think will be more profitable to build the arena?

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT-Via Fresh Grade

While I don’t want to jump into the controversial topic of formative or summative assessment. But I’m not afraid to tell you that I am a strong believer of assessing students in a companionate way. During my glorious teaching days in Japan, my fight with administration in all the districts I taught was always on one subject-“…do not use one day test or exam to judge this student…maybe he is having a bad day today due to unforeseeable circumstances…should we now judge his academic abilities based on just a 50 minutes test…?

Thank goodness! there is Fresh grade or MyEdBC. During my practicum, I became master of my Freshgrade. I customize the app. so that students and parents can comment and reflect on student’s daily performance in class, participation in group activities and tests. I love BC for giving me these apps. Up Freshgrade! Up MyEdBC! If you’re a teacher and you haven’t use or (don’t know how to use)any of these apps. I advise you don’t go on holidays, start online study ASAP.

Weekly projects for academic courses

Students ask to submit to me by email, website, links, photos, Newsletters, video production or any media, showing all they have learnt from Monday to Thursday.

Inviting Guest Speakers into my class once a month

The reason is to give students a different perspective about the course. It helps students to have a fore knowledge about the real life after school.

As I noticed as a student, I becomes so bored listening to my professors everyday for 90 mins.

Technology in class (Strong believer of Tech in class). In class,  I am competing with student’s digital devices and engaging the student in my class. To win (I’m always a winner) I have to work with my competitor to achieve my goal, which means, asking students to bring out their devices and make them useful in class, even inside the computer lab.

TECHNOLOGY APPS.

– To learn new language or improve on it. I used this app. to learn some Punjabi during my practicum. Students were surprise to hear me saying ‘hello’, ‘how are you today’, etc in Punjabi. For me, It was a good tool to build personal relationship with the students.
