About

Design and Technology Education is a program in Media & Technology Studies within the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy at UBC.

The BEd in the Teacher Education program includes a major in Technology Education and minor in Computer Science. Technology Education is offered in collaboration with the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

Diploma programs include specializations in Computing Studies and Technology Studies. In the BC school system, Computer Science and Technology Education are part of the Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (ADST) cluster. A Certificate program is pending in Applied Design and Learning Technology. For examples of undergraduate courses, see the D&T blog and MTSE blog.

Definition of Technology Education (S. Petrina, 2019):
Technology Education focuses on learning and teaching about technology: 1) The knowledge and skills “required, and the process applied, to conceive, design, make, build, operate, sustain, recycle or retire, something with significant technical content for a specified purpose;” and 2) The knowledge and values required, and the methods applied, to evaluate the implications of these processes and products for animals, cultures, families & individuals, industries, nature, and societies. The substantive fields include craft, design, engineering, and trades. Technology education is typically organized around communication (e.g., computer science, design, graphics, CAD, ICT, media production), construction, manufacturing & production (e.g., metalwork, robotics, woodwork),and  energy & transportation (e.g., automotives, electronics, power mechanics). The trend is toward clustering in ADST (BC Education) and STEM. UBC’s Technology Education program partners with BCIT.
