I completed my CFE in Bali, Indonesia at the Green School (GS). This school was awarded “2012 Greenest School on Earth” by the USGBC Center for Green Schools. The GS is progressive in its curriculum and does not resemble any school I have ever encountered. For example, classes are taught in six week blocks, and there are many interesting ones to choose from such as “Plant Pornography”. Ban Ki Moon remarked that it was, “The most unique and impressive school I have ever visited.”
Some of my essential duties on the CFE included assisting the high school manager with redesigning the school’s transcript, attending meetings (student and staff), and participating in Enterprise classes. This experience has not only shown me that it is possible to create a new school, but also how to do it.
As a result of this CFE, I no longer know that there is a “right” way to teach anything. Not knowing this is important to my teaching practice because it inspires me to be bold and try new things in future lessons. The dedicated teachers at GS are constantly working to improve their curriculum, and ensure that students are truly learning and experiencing the material in a meaningful way. I hope to apply this in my own classrooms someday wherever my teaching career may be.
