This was an engaging lecture that discussed how the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) use GIS in their operations and future planning. Some examples of how GIS was being applied were risk analysis, station planning, and response mapping, which highlighted the wide breadth of the functionalities and capabilities of GIS technology in the ‘real’ world. After listening to the lecture, it is hard to imagine how different their operations would be without GIS since GPS maps out the shortest distance to the source of the emergency, hydrant and fire station coverage are analyzed for ideal locations, and so on. Also, fire departments seem to be an ideal place to work as a GIS analyst given the variety of work available!
