In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) released 94 Calls to Action, which call upon on governments, educational and religious institutions, civil society groups, and all Canadians to learn about and participate in the work of reconciliation. Call to Action 80 “call[s] upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.”
UBC will be observing the Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2021. As such, classes will be cancelled and university employees who are normally entitled to provincial and federal holidays will receive this day off.
