Graduate Student Spaces and Facilities

Graduate students in the English Department have 24/7 access to three student spaces on Buchanan Tower, Floor 6. After hours entry in BuTo is through rear doors only (side facing Buchanan A). Please note that students do not have access to any other floors outside business hours.

Graduate Lounge

The Graduate Lounge is a quiet, department-only space for students to unwind. A social space, and also good for any collaborative working needs. The lounge is equipped with a kitchenette (microwave, fridge, coffee, machine, cutlery), lockers, a dining space and a couch. The lockers are free to use for long or short term. Locks can be borrowed from the department office with a $20 deposit.

Reading Room

The reading room is a quiet working space for grad students, currently on its way to also becoming a functional lending library. Although book lending is currently stalled, the study spaces are always open to use.

Computer Lab

The computer lab is a silent study space. It can be accessed through the reading room, as well as through a separate door located outside (to the left of the reading room door). The Lab is equipped with Mac as well as Windows devices, along with a printer. The computers erase existing data upon restart, so please plan to save your work accordingly.

The printer works with your CWL printing account. You will need to load money onto your UBC card to access any printer on campus, whether in the Computer Lab or in the libraries. To load money and access printing facilities, please visit: PaperCut Login for University of British Columbia (ubc.ca).

If you run into any technical difficulties in the lab, please contact Dominique Yupangco, the department’s systems coordinator, on dominique.yupangco@ubc.ca.

Student Mailboxes

Graduate student mailboxes and folders are located inside the Department Office on Floor 3 and can only be accessed during office hours (Monday to Friday, 08AM- 04PM, barring statutory holidays). If you are a TA, this is where your desk copies, roster/blue book, work submitted to the office drop box, and exams written with the Centre for Accessibility will be delivered.
