If you were at the Enrolment Services stand-up meeting last week, you may have heard that there will be a rare chance to attend an in-person Floor Warden training session at the end of the month! Now don’t balk. We know the words ‘floor’ and ‘warden’ and ‘training’ combined might sound about as interesting as watching paint dry, but read on and be inspired to sign up!

Scottford Price, the acting Building Emergency Director for Brock Hall, has managed to book Paul Nakagawa to come all the way from Risk Management to provide the training required to be an effective Floor Warden. Scott guarantees that Paul’s visit will be a real treat!

The training will happen on Thursday, April 25th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Those who haven’t received an invite to the training but wish to attend are welcome to contact Scott directly at scottford.price@ubc.ca.

In the best interest of staff safety in the building, each department should have at least two trained Floor Wardens to ensure consistent coverage in case of emergencies. It’s like the buddy system in a professional setting. If you are in a department where you are only aware of one Floor Warden, you are encouraged to sign up for training! If you are not able to make the training with Paul Nakagawa, you can also complete the Floor Warden training online through UBC’s Risk Management Services at http://rms.ubc.ca/training-and-general-education-courses/safety-programs-training/.

Last but not least, you may be aware that Brock Hall has a newly minted Building Emergency Response Plan (BERP). An executive summary version of the BERP is also available to read. While there is no expectation for most staff to read these documents, they may help in understanding health and safety procedures in place for the building. For any current or future Floor Wardens, it is also helpful in outlining floor warden roles and duties. Please contact Scott for a copy of the full or executive summary of the BERP.
