ES - Under Construction
ESP Matt Isherwood illustrated a series of conceptual drawings (one of which is seen here underneath our Under Construction banner) to help communicate the redesign committee’s ideas to stakeholders and architects. (Under Construction illustration – Nicolas Raymond, flic.kr/p/cirx2w)

If you’ve been through the Brock Hall concourse recently, you’ll have noticed the construction zone sealed off behind a curtain of plastic.

I sat down with ESP Rebecca Pouliot, a member of the committee tasked with redesigning the space, to find out just what’s going on back there.

Rebecca explained that ES is constructing a revamped student services space along the west side of the concourse, that is expected to be ready for the start of classes in September. The new space is designed to feel inviting for students, to instill a sense of privacy and discretion and to help students access our services with greater ease.

We are creating a functional space to provide better service to students, something that is more inviting, more intuitive and that is going to create a stronger presence for our services. – Rebecca Pouliot

The new service area will also allow ESPs to make better use of the space behind the sliding doors in the concourse, reduce setup and tear-down time each day, enhance security and ensure a higher degree of student privacy.

The space will include a student self service area, a service desk staffed by ESPs and an informal gathering space for student use. It will also include enhanced signage to help students better access the services they need.

To design the space, the redesign committee engaged members of the ES Service Layer in a series of focus groups, in addition to consulting with select students. Following that, ESP Matt Isherwood illustrated a series of conceptual drawings to help communicate the committee’s ideas. Members of the committee included Rebecca Pouliot, Colleen Mooney, Paul Poole, Matt Isherwood, Natalie Hargott, Nikki Baker, Scottford Price, Mike Becir and Maggie Hartley.

The ESP service locations in Ike Barber and the Welcome Centre will continue to operate once the new service area opens in the concourse.
