Destination UBC Okanagan crowd

“I had a vague idea of what I thought UBCO would be like…. Let’s just say I was extremely wrong. UBCO is a million times better than I imagined…. I think I met more people that I actually like talking to than in all 3 years of high school. I’m excited to start in September…. actually can I start in July? If that could happen that’d be perfect.” (Stephen)

After final rez rounds on Saturday night just past 2:00 am, Jay Graham and I collapsed on the couches in the Purcell lounge, buzzing from the day. Tired and inspired, we relived our own first days at university while sharing moments from Destination UBC. And with 206 students flown and ferried from across Canada, 62 students bussed from the Lower Mainland, and over 100 from the Okanagan, there were a lot of moments to share…

I had the thrill of standing in front of them all at once, with their excited eyes on the stage while they imagined their university lives beginning at UBC. Their excitement was palpable – and their attention almost unwavering, whether they listened to a lecture from psychology professor Dr. Paul Davies or chanted for UBC-O.

One of my highlights, though, took place right before our late-night breather, while sending students from rez lounges off to beddy-byes. I watched students exchange contact information, hug one another goodbye, and promise to reunite in September.

To be honest, they’re not waiting until September to connect with each other, even though they’ve headed home.  Jay’s highlight of Destination UBC was being privy to students’ excited Tweets, Instagrams and Facebook posts all weekend – and still this week, as they continue to express everything from their love for the campus to their newfound friendships. Our UBC student staff and chaperones have been right there with them, welcoming them to the community by sharing photos and connecting the newbies with the UBC inside scoop.

“Wow what a transition!!! Going from the beautiful sun bathed kelowna to a crowded Calculus class room in 24 hours. Some things just aren’t fair…” (Shaamir)

The program was full, with everything from faculty sessions, campus tours, and information sessions led by a multitude of UBC faculty, students and campus partners – to glow-in-the-dark capture the flag, a BBQ, a trivia competition, and an amazing race around Kelowna. Students truly connected with learning, the campus, and one another.  I really couldn’t conclude this blog post without a huge shoutout to all of the people in SRA (especially our student staff!) and beyond who made this event a huge success.  We’re looking forward to doing it all over again in Vancouver – with hundreds more students and the help of even more UBCers!
