Step 4. Stories come to life

Now the real fun begins! Time to take what you have learned and discovered and create your own digital story of immigration in Canada.

Before you get started, make sure you re-read the rubric that we made together as a class on what is expected from this assignment.

Step 1: Chose a digital Story Tool

In the Digital Sandbox we have been adding different types of tools all year. In your conference with the teacher you should have selected 2-4 tools that you think you want to use.  Take some time to look at these tools and chose the one you think will be the best to tell your story. You can check in with your conferencing partner if you are really struggling to make a choice.

Step 2: Create!

You will have the next three classes to work on this assignment. You should also spend a little time at home working on this as well to make sure you can finish on time and be prepared for our share day.

Step 3: Post

Post  your timeline on your blog, under your Digital Stories page. Make sure you add a new tab and title it “My Immigration Story”

If you are using a new tool, remember to add it to the Digital Sandbox. If you need help using your tool you can search Youtube for videos, ask a friend or you can ask your teacher for help.

Remember, how well you use the tool is important, but not as important as the story itself and the connections you need to make.

Good luck and have fun!

Step 4: Discuss

After completing your digital stories, work together in pairs to reconstruct the telling of an immigrant’s story using technology from today to answer the following questions:

  • How did the news report what was happening in their country the day they moved
  • What would they report in an email to a friend back home about their journey?
  • How do these two narratives compare?
  • What additional media could they use to tell their story today?
  • How is their story similar or different to one immigrant case study?

Continue on to Step 5: Reflection

If you have questions on this activity you would like to ask your peers or have an answer to a question, post in the space below.
