FOMO – Assignment 4

Hi everyone. I’m sorry I didn’t make the deadline yesterday, but here is my final project.

I was inspired by two posts from the last few weeks. One was the post that introduced us to Piktochart and the other was the discussion on Hypermedia and Information Overload. I see FOMO as a real life issue in my classroom and it is a result of our ever increasing digital world. I loved working with the program and I’m glad that I was able to use it. I can see application of it in my geography classes and I cannot wait to see my students create their own infographics.

The program itself is easy to use and allows you to embed videos and links. It was great.

Anyway, my final project is on FOMO and I made this interactive infographic. It can be found here:

I had a great time in this course. Have a great rest of the summer everyone!

  1. Great infographic! I hadn’t realized FOMO was a real term but I am ashamed to admit that I do sometimes suffer from FOMO, although more so when I was younger. I think I would like to show this to my class in the fall…

    • Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I think we can all suffer from FOMO a little bit at times. I think it would be interesting to survey your kids about FOMO and see if they can wean themselves off technology for a while.

  2. Jody,

I think you picked a great topic! I definitely have experienced full on FOMO. As an on call teacher I have compulsive concern when school is in session that I might miss an opportunity for work. Where I have to carry my phone around with me no matter what I’m doing in my life and I despise it! I’ve also experienced this in course through UBC… If I don’t respond immediately, my original thought may be typed by someone else, so then I have to rethink the entire article.

Anyway, thanks for the chart – as I said, and imperative topic and I think you did a great job.

    • I can understand your need to carry your phone around. I barely remember being a supply teacher (back in 1996)…cell phones were certainly not as prevalent and there was no such thing as a smarthphone then.

As for UBC, I overcome FOMO with postings by not reading any postings until after I post therefore I don’t worry about whether someone has said the same thing already 🙂

  3. Hi Jody,
I like this Piktochart! I found the part about how to overcome FOMO in Psychology Today interesting. Almost everything that is suggested is counter to what (western) society is telling people to do. Hurry up, have it all, it’s all about me, multi task. Generally issues like FOMO are a symptom of a greater problem in society, in this case too much pressure to be everything to everyone all the time. I don’t think this is new but it appears to be heightened by the addition of technology into the equation. With the actual ability to be available 24/7 people are feeling the pressure and the resulting psychological problems. Thanks for highlighting this.
    Susan
