Consumer writing was a valuable learning opportunity for me in FNH 381. It was a rewarding experience to write a blog for a client and learn about the practice of a registered dietician. Maryam and I chose Hemp Fertility as our topic because hemp is gaining significant attention in the scientific community and public. In particular, we were interested in the effect of the hemp on fertility. The registered dietician assigned to us runs a private practice in fertility. She also works with companies and this article is to be posted on her client’s website. They sell hemp seed products. In our meeting, she provided us with scientific papers on the topic to review and firsthand knowledge on the topic. I gained knowledge both on hemp and fertility and nutrition based writing for the public. Through this assignment, my partner and I translated scientific information into simple language for the targeted audience. I look forward to many more insightful interactions and discussions with professionals in my fourth year in the Dietetics program.
Now that FNH 381 is over, I have the opportunity to self-assess my learning in the course. FNH 381 was a short yet professionally informative course. It shed light on nutrition education for kids, counselling adults, consumer writing, and clinical practice in dietetics. I look forward to improving what I have already learned and explore new ideas and practices in dietetics profession.

I personally liked this assignment because it provided a context for interacting and talking to our dietitians. I had two good discussions with both Anna and Alima. I also consulted my MI resources which were very helpful to our presentation and added richness and depth. In terms of group work, we had some challenges with arranging times when everyone could attend. By the end, we connected with Messanger calls and it worked quite well. Below, I have attached a copy of our group hand out on strategies when you have only 10 minutes. Handout
It was a nice experience to revisit ICDEP and reflect on my new learnings and accomplishments. Below I attach the updated ICDEP self-evaluation document for the end of year 3. I see that there are some sections that are empty. I look forward to learning and exploring those areas in the 4th year of the Dietetics!
Maryam and I partnered with each other and went to West Bay Elementary School in West Vancouver to give a one-hour nutrition education to fifth graders. I enjoyed this experience a lot because children were energetic and very engaged in the activities. Personally, I enjoy working with children a lot because I think they have a life ahead of them and nutrition education makes a big difference a long way. I hope we have more opportunities working with children and younger population.
I job shadowed Alima Soodeen at the Diabetes clinic in Abbotsford General Hospital. In the morning Alima led a Diabetes group education class and met with clients one on one in the afternoon. The most significant learning observation in this shadowing was Alima working side by side with a nurse. It was through teamwork they taught the clients about different aspects of their conditions. It is a significant piece of learning for me because I understand that we achieve the best client-centred care through teamwork.
What?
For counseling assignment, I met with my client who wanted to learn about healthy eating and energy boost. My two goals for this first counseling project were being an active listener and empower my client. I met with my client two times in her office. I did a nutrition assessment in our first meeting and in the second meeting; I advised my client on her goals. She was a young client who came to the session with no clear nutrition goals. However, by the end of our assessment session, she identified three clear and achievable goals, which I found this to be the goldstone of my counselling experience.
So What?
I feel that building rapport and trust was the most significant element of a successful counseling session to help my client achieve her goals. Before meeting with my client, I was nervous about our session because it was a world of unknown. However, I went into the session with an open mind, use the techniques I had learned in class, and let things fall into place naturally. It worked! I could open up the session, helped my client to see her dietary strengths and finally gave her few resources to use for future. In this counselling assignment I accomplished both my goals to understand my client and give her confident she needed.
Now What?
Learning effective communication skills will remain my main goal for FNH 480 and other learning venues in Dietetics. I will aim to improve my counseling skills such as motivational interviewing to create a proper and safe environment for my clients to discuss their concerns. I understand this is just the beginning and clients come with different perspectives, knowledge levels, and attitudes. I look forward to seeing what challenges or opportunities are a head.
I cannot believe one semester is down already! Reflecting back, I learned a lot of introductory skills related to the profession and enjoyed meeting so many dietitians working in different settings. I look forward to advancing my skills in 381!
What?
ICDEP self-assessment is an ongoing task to keep track of our progress towards competency achievement in Dietetics program. It is like a compass that guides me through the program to stay on track. It helps me to stay focused and choose my activities relevant to the profession and points out areas I still need to cover. The goal setting exercise is an extension to ICDEP through which I can shape my next few years in the program and beyond.
So What?
It was a huge task to sit and work on ICDEP assignment, yet it equally is an important exercise. It required a lot of referencing and reflecting on what I had done personally, professionally, and academically. I was nervous at the beginning but as I worked on; I realized it was actually a great tool to have if I regularly visit that through the program. So far in FNH 380, I have learned that the program equally values my personal experiences, and I used them in filling for some competencies in ICDEP. Goal setting activity was very interesting since it showed achieving ICDEP competencies is an ongoing process I can achieve by making SMART goals. No matter if I don’t have experience in all areas, my purposefully chosen and achieved SMART goals will take me there.
Now What?
The assignment description indicates that we meet this document in FNH 380 and 480 so we can add more attained competencies to it.
I will continue to focus on ICDEP document and tailor my SMART goals towards meeting the rest of skills for entry-level competencies for dietetics. Management and population health are two areas of my focus for the next round of SMART goals. I understand these learning will take me beyond achieving professional competencies and become a better person. This is what I really enjoy most about this process and hold valuable.
