Unit Two Reflection Report
In Unit Two, we investigated the best practice of using LinkedIn and created/revised our professional social media network, which is quite useful. Although I have used LinkedIn for many years, I have never realized that my old LinkedIn profile missed many important parts, including the summary and the description of my previous working experience. Moreover, I have done a peer review for the LinkedIn profiles with Cheryl in our writing team, and Cheryl provided much advice for my LinkedIn profile like breaking the long sentences and adding interpersonal skills. Thanks to Cheryl, I can know more about what other people think of my profile and improve the profile from other people’s perspective, and it was also a great experience that I could provide some easy tips for Cheryl to improve the profile, such as utilizing the LinkedIn short link. As recently I am busy job hunting for a full-time position after my graduation, revising the LinkedIn profile is quite helpful to me.
The process of brainstorming and preparing the formal report proposal and outline is quite interesting. As I am a Computer Science student now, almost all of the research reports I have worked on in the recent two years are technical-oriented, and it is great that the Eng 301 class gives me a chance to research something more related to people and the social. Actually, it is hard for me to choose a topic as I am not familiar with this area, while my recent experience of having dinner with a vegetarian friend gave me an idea of choosing a related topic. By analyzing the results from survey and interview, I think I can understand the importance of providing vegan foods in the restaurant in different situations and come up with some suitable way for the Futian Dumpling Restaurant to provide vegan foods, and I hope I can utilize the data analysis technique I learned from my Computer Science classes to solve this real-world problem.
As for the peer review of the formal report proposals, I worked with Lisa, who is quite experienced in social-related research. It is very interesting to read Lisa’s topic about reducing CCTS complaints at Telus call center, and I have also learned from her way of finding customers’ complaint issues by analyzing the mid-year reports and current procedure of the Telus. During the peer review, I have learned that we should think from the readers’ perspective, especially when we are introducing some new areas. For example, Lisa might be very familiar with the organizations of telecom-television system in Canada as she has worked at Telus before, while I have just been to Canada for around 2 years and know almost nothing about telecom-television in Canada. As a result, I am very confused about the relationship between CCTS and Telus at the beginning when I read her reports. Similarly, when I was an intern in some software companies in Vancouver, the companies often ordered group meals for us when having team meetings or activities. As a result, I assumed it is straightforward to determine whether a restaurant is qualified for group meal ordering by interviewing the facilities coordinators, but Lisa may not understand why I want to do such kind of interview at the beginning. In the future, I will definitively consider more from the readers’ perspective when I am writing articles.
Overall, Unit Two of the Eng 301 class is interesting and usefully, and I hope to work on more interesting and challenging topics in the coming two units.
