jeju island: saturday

Continuing on with the second part of my Jeju Island adventures!

On Saturday morning we went down for breakfast as usual and I cooked eggs for peoples’ breakfasts. I really don’t like eating eggs but I know they’re a good source of protein… so I’ve been eating them a lot here while on exchange.

I really don’t like egg yolks though and usually the only way I’ll consume my eggs are if they’re hard boiled or scrambled (and only scrambled in a certain way too). But all my friends like easy over eggs so I decided to make those. I discovered I have an amazing talent for cooking easy over eggs ๐Ÿ˜€

May, Claudia, Billy, Stef, and I took the bus to take the ferry to Udo Islandย (์šฐ๋„ํ•ด์–‘๋„๋ฆฝ๊ณต์›).

It seems strange to think that we were on an island and then we went to another island from there… but while we were on the bus to the ferry we got into a car accident :O No one was hurt, but we did have to get on another bus.

The ferry to Udo Island cost 5500 for the round trip; there are 2 ports you can arrive at on Udo Island, one that has more people and one that has less. I would recommend going to the one that has less people but I didn’t really manage to figure out how you know which port you’re going to arrive at.

It was really windy on the way there!

We arrived at Udo Island kind of late due to the car accident so we quickly rented our bikes. There’s a lot of places to rent bikes from, and you’ll see them right when you get off the ferry. You can even rent ATVs and electric go-kart type things if you’re too lazy to bike.

After we rented our bikes the first thing we did was get lunch!

Originally we wanted to eat this fried rice dish that is famous on Udo Island, but there were too many people waiting for seats. Instead, we went to this restaurant that served seafood pancakeย (ํ•ด๋ฌผํŒŒ์ „) and seafood ramen (instant noodles, not the Japanese ramen). Seafood pancake is my favourite Korean dish so I was really excited for it..

… and it was the most delicious seafood pancake I have ever had in my entire life. I’m really glad that the pancake lived up to my expectations! The ramen was yummy too but Korean ramens are usually spicy so I couldn’t eat a lot. You know it’s spicy when Billy sweats a lot ๐Ÿ˜›

We then started cycling around. We wanted to follow the outline of the island so we’d always be able to see the water, and we kept stopping to take pictures since it was so nice around the island.

The only problem I had was that it was too windy and it kept blowing my hair everywhere T.T

But the view was really nice everywhere! Plus it wasn’t too sunny so it was perfect for taking pictures and it wasn’t too tiring to cycle around either.

We stopped for some orange juice, since Jeju Island is famous for the Hallabong oranges. It was really delicious and it came in a cute bottle too (that I’m planning to bring home)!

We also stopped for peanut ice cream, which is famous on Jeju Island (or Udo Island? I’m not really sure). I’m not a really big fan of peanuts, since Colin can’t eat peanuts either… so I didn’t really have high expectations for the ice cream. But it was actually so delicious :O

More cycling and more cycling and more taking pictures of the view!

Claudia said she wanted to go to a beach on Udo Island which had popcorn rocks, and it was good because it was really close to the port that we arrived at. When we realized we didn’t have that much time left, we just cut through the island to go back to the port we came from and then found the beach.

The rocks were really cool! I don’t think they were actually rocks but they looked like it. And we each took some home (even though we probably shouldn’t have…)

The last ferry to leave the island was at 5:30pm, but when we got there there was a HUGE lineup of people and ferries just kept coming and coming to ship people off the island. Claudia, Billy, and I were really tired so instead of standing outside to look at the view we opted to go inside the large cabin and sit down for a while. You just take your shoes off and then sit down on the ground.

After arriving back on Jeju Island, it wasn’t too dark yet so we decided go to to Seongsan Ilchulbongย (์„ฑ์‚ฐ์ผ์ถœ๋ด‰)ย to see the sunset.. even though you’re supposed to climb up it to see the sunrise (hence ‘ilchul’ in its name – that means ‘sunrise’ ).

Apparently it’s a UNESCO world heritage site :O It looked really high but it only took us 15 minutes to walk up, even though we’d been cycling for a few hours already!

We thought it was a volcano at first but it turned out to just be this huge crater thing.

Then we went back down and went to have Jeju black pork for dinner!

May and Billy already had it last night but they said they didn’t mind having it again so they took us to the place they went to yesterday, which was near our hostel.

It was really good :O And we ordered a steamed eggย (๊ณ„๋ž€์ฐœ) too, and then I looked at the receipt and realized we got it for free because we’re foreigners ๐Ÿ˜€ It literally said ‘foreigners’ on the receipt and we just thought it was really funny that it said that.

Originally we weren’t even planning to go to Udo Island, but I’m really glad that we ended up going with Billy and May!
