FoodSafe Level 1 Sessions: sign up deadline – Jan 25, 2017

Agora Cafe will be hosting two FoodSafe 1 sessions!

FOODSAFE Level 1 is a food handling, sanitation and work safety course designed for front line food service workers such as cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers. The course covers important food safety and worker safety information including foodborne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing

Become a Sustainability Ambassador: application – deadline Jan 29, 2017

Become a Sustainability Ambassador

The Sustainability Ambassadors Peer Program is a sustainability education outreach activity of the UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI) Teaching & Learning Office.

Volunteer Ambassadors work with the Manager of Sustainability Student Engagement as part of a team to deliver sustainability programming to students on UBC’s Vancouver campus.  They also network with student groups on campus to promote sustainability education and provide sustainability consulting.

LPI Essay Writing Workshops: January-April 2017

Join peer writing consultants and LPI specialists from the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication to learn more about what makes an effective LPI essay, and what you can do to improve your score when writing for the LPI. There will also be time for questions and sharing of resources.

All workshops will meet in the Lillooet Room in IKBLC.

Wednesday, January 18: 5-7pm

Wednesday, February 1: 5-7pm

Thursday, February 9: 5-7pm

Wednesday, February 15: 5-7pm

Wednesday, March 1: 5-7pm

Alternating Fridays (Starting January 13), we will host a timed (90 minute) writing time with LPI essay prompts so that students can practice writing in a timed classroom environment. There will be time after for students to do a brief self-evaluation. All of these sessions will meet in IKBLC 156.

Climate Change: Let’s Talk It Out! – Jan 24, 2017

Are you worried about how climate change will affect our generation and future generations? Do want to discuss some of the today’s climate change issues in food, agriculture, and the environment?

Well, we have the golden opportunity for you!

The LFS ACE team will be hosting a world-café style event, where students from all departments within the LFS faculty can come out, and discuss various challenges and issues that climate change is imposing on food, agriculture, and the environment.

We are lucky to have a set of fantastic professors attending, who will facilitate the mini-discussion groups within the world-café discussions.

Climate Change: Let’s Talk It Out! will provide the opportunity for you to get to know your peers, make a few new friends and learn more about various topics from your professors in an interactive way.

Climate Change: Let’s Talk It Out! will be happening on Tuesday, Jan. 24th, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 pm. It will be located at Agora Eats Café.

Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Graduate Scholarship – deadline Feb 17, 2017

The SJDAWC is calling for applications from potential graduate students for the 2017 Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Graduate Scholarship. The Scholarship will support the training of researchers at the masters or doctoral level to pursue animal welfare research at the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Both applied or more fundamental approaches to research pertaining to animal welfare are welcome. Applications for 2017 will be accepted until 12pm (noon) (AST) Friday February 17, 2017, with decisions to be announced in April. Students may take up their award at any time of the year but must do so within 12 months of the date of the letter of offer.

Please note: All potential graduate students must identify a graduate faculty member willing to supervise the student should the application be successful. This must be included with the application.

APBI 496B Practicums at BC SPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre open – deadlines vary

APBI students – APBI 496B Practicums at BC SPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, ‘Wild ARC’, are now open for application. Practicums are available in the following two month full-time placements; March – April (limited availability – applications due Feb 1, 2017), May – June (Applications due March 1, 2017), July – August (Applications due March 1, 2017), and September – October (Applications due March 1, 2017).

This incredible hands-on 400 hour experience qualifies for APBI 496B (6) credits, but can also be done as just a volunteer opportunity if students have already graduated.  See
