IFTSA College Bowl – deadline Oct 15, 2016

The annual regional IFTSA College Bowl will be held at UBC on March 11, 2017! This competition tests the brains of food science students from across the continent on topics such as food chemistry, food microbiology, IFT trivia, and other food science related topics. We are scouting 3rd year, 4th year and graduate students to join the UBC team. If this is up your alley, please send an email to Elaine Cheng (elainecheng0803@yahoo.com.hk) by Oct 15, 2016!

Grad Photo Appointment – November 2016 Graduation

Congratulations on having made it to the end of this chapter of your journey here at UBC! It’s a special moment we know you want to commemorate, as does the Faculty, so make sure to book a Grad Photo appointment with Artona and be included in the Photo Composite for the 2016-2017 school year! Note that only photos from Artona will be included in the LFS Photo Composite.

Those experiencing financial hardship that would prevent them from taking Grad Photos may be eligible for a small sponsored coupon discount. Requests for sponsorship can be directed to Karla Carreras, Student Engagement Officer, in LFS Student Services (at karla.carreras@ubc.ca). Please include “Artona Photos Sponsorship Coupons Request” in the subject line and provide a brief description as to why you are eligible for a sponsored coupon discount. Limited sponsorship coupons will be available and they will be distributed based on application date.

The photo appointments are an ongoing process throughout until November.

Group photos: If you would like to set up an appointment for group photos with Artona, please call in at 604-872-7272 to book a time. Group photo appointments cannot be made through the online booking system – that is for individual graduation photos only.

Help shape UBC’s new recreation and athletics facilities strategy!

Your feedback is important regarding a series of proposed options that will guide future investments on athletics and recreation facilities on campus.

UBC is developing a long-range facilities strategy to meet a growing need for recreational and fitness space on campus, as well as to address aging facilities such as Thunderbird Arena and War Memorial Gym.

FREE LPI Workshops: Registration required – October 6th, 13th or 20th, 2016

What: Free LPI Workshop

When: Please make sure you choose only one of the sessions below:

  • Thursday, October 6th from 5-7:30pm
  • Thursday, October 13th from 5-7:30pm
  • Thursday, October 20th from 5-7:30pm

Where: Dodson Room, IKBLC

Why: Concerned about taking the LPI? This 2.5 hour workshop offers tips and information for writing the LPI. Learn tips for choosing a question, managing your time, and writing in an appropriate style. We will also discuss marking, and review sample level 5 essays. There will be plenty of time for your questions, too! (Please note: the presenters can only answer questions about writing the LPI essay. Any questions about whether you need to take the LPI will have to go through LFS Student Services).

Global Experience Fair | October 5, 2016

The Go Global office is organizing “The Global Experience Fair, ” this will take place on Wednesday October 5th in the main lobby at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre from 11am to 5pm.

Students will explore the variety of international learning opportunities available and discuss with advisors how to add a global perspective to their UBC degree. Returned UBC students as well as current exchange students from UBC partner universities will be available to share their experiences first hand.

A series of presentations will be offered throughout the day, which students can attend to learn more from Go Global advisors about exchange, research abroad, summer programs, and global seminars, as well as a presentation by ESPs on how to fund their international experience.

FRANKLY SPEAKING Event: Mental Health Literacy | Oct 11, 2016. Register by Oct 4

Join Dr. Blye Frank, Dean of UBC’s Faculty of Education for his inaugural FRANKLY SPEAKING event. In the spirit of ideas worth advancing, the theme will be Mental Health Literacy. One in five Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime and mental health issues affect up to half the total student population at many universities. Mental health literacy encompasses the knowledge, beliefs and abilities that enable the recognition, management or prevention of mental health problems with a range of benefits including prevention, early recognition and intervention, and reduction of stigma associated with mental illness.

FRANKLY SPEAKING provides alumni and friends of  UBC’s Faculty of Education with the opportunity to hear from prominent speakers on featured topics relevant to the field of education.

Yale Environmental Studies & Forestry Masters Program Info Session – Oct 27, 2016

Four master’s programs will be discussed: Forestry, Environmental Management, Environmental Science and Forest Science.
