National Student Food Summit – June 17-19, 2016 in Waterloo

The Summit includes students from 1st years to those in their PhD. There conference is focused on “campus food systems change” especially researching and reducing student food insecurity and shifting campus procurement towards more just, sustainable and humane food systems. We also will be focusing on campus gardens and farms, and community collaboration. And of course, meeting other peers interested in food systems change is always the best part of the conference!

National Student Food Summit

Meal Exchange’s annual conference, the National Student Food Summit is Canada’s largest leadership retreat for students passionate about working for ‘good food for all’ on campus.

The Summit brings together students and stakeholders from colleges and universities across the country (literally Newfoundland to Vancouver Island!) to prepare for working with Meal Exchange over the summer and upcoming school year. It features training on Meal Exchange programs and tools, discussions with faculty, foodservice, and civil society leaders in the food movement, and lots of space to connect and strategize with students from campuses across the country.

Just a friendly reminder that the BCFPA Spring Speaker’s Evening scheduled for Wednesday, May 11, 2016
 at the Firefighters’ Banquet and Conference Centre (6515 Bonsor Ave, Burnaby, BC – at Metrotown area). The Speaker’s Evening will be on updates on supplemented food products in Canada and high risk communication.

The title of the Speaker’s Evening is entitled, “Updates from Health Canada’s Food Directorate & Risk Management from a Social Media Perspective“.

Guest speakers include:

Dr. William Yan (Director of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences in the Food Directorate, Health Canada) who will be speaking on “Updates from Health Canada’s Food Directorate: Supplemented Food Products in Canada, What You Need To Know”Dr. Yan was appointed as Director of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences in the Food Directorate. Since then, he has provided leadership in the Bureau’s work on developing nutritional standards and regulations as well as pre-market assessment of novel foods, novel fibres, health claims and infant formulas.  Recently, Dr. Yan led the transition of food-like natural health products to the food regulatory framework. He is currently leading the Food Directorate’s work on improving how nutritional information is provided on food labels in Canada. Dr. Yan will be speaking on the current direction of Health Canada regarding food and nutrition regulation, key priorities of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences such as amendments to nutrition labelling regulations, revision to fortification policies and management of supplemented foods.

Della Smith (Principal, Q Workshop Inc) who will be speaking on “High Risk Communication Today”. As a consultant, Della has specialized in crisis and issues management, and worked on food related issues including product recalls, food tampering, activism, disease outbreaks, food poisoning and more. She has also worked extensively in the health sector and with regulatory agencies. Today her company, Q Workshop, focuses on helping organizations through workshops and facilitated sessions. Della will be speaking on food related high-risk communications through practical tips, tools and techniques. Della’s interest breakdown will include: food producers, academic, government, consultants and contract labs.

UBC Dietetic Intern Research Symposium – June 1, 2016

Join UBC Dietetics interns as they present their research project results. We will also hear from a dietitian who has recently undertaken an exciting practice-based research project.

 
Date: Wednesday June 1, 2016 | 12:30 – 4:30 pm
Location: The live event is in the Cullen Family Lecture Theatre, St Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, with teleconference sites around the province. Interns outside the lower mainland will deliver their presentations remotely. Live site venue details are attached for your convenience.

Schedule: Is attached. The afternoon will include ten mini-presentations by intern research groups from across BC as well as one presentation featuring research conducted recently by a dietitian in practice.

What will we eat when we need to feed 11 billion people globally by 2100? With rapid population increase and climate change coupled with the focus on cash crops and loss of food diversity, is a fundamental shift in our diets and the way our food is supplied essential for us to be able to feed ourselves equitably worldwide? Hear from chef, restaurateur and climate change activist, Meeru Dhalwala, on her insights on these and other aspects of our future food sources.

Pacific Regional Society of Soil Science – 2016 Summer Soil ID Course

Every summer the PRSSS hosts a soil identification course that is suitable for both the soil professional and soil-curious alike. Each year the course is held in a different region of BC where course participants can benefit from the wealth of knowledge shared by local soil experts as they explore the diverse array of soil types throughout the province.

This year the course is being offered in the South Okanagan (wine country!) from June 13-16, 2016. The course fee is $120 and registration is now open. To ensure adequate face time between participants and instructors, we limit registration to 25 people. Registration closes on May 20th, 2016.

Richmond Food Security Society’s Get Rooted Youth Leadership Program

Do you believe that every person has the right to access healthy, sustainable, and local food? Do you believe that food is an important part of our lives and culture? Do you want to know how our food choices impact our local community and the environment? And most importantly, do you believe that you can make a difference?

If you are a youth living in Richmond, between 16-25 years old, and have a passion for food security advocacy, leadership, team-work, and igniting ideas into community actions, Get Rooted is the program for you! The Get Rooted Youth Leadership Program provides Richmond youth with unique and fulfilling opportunities to:

  • Attend expert-led educational workshops
  • Volunteer with different community organizations
  • Facilitate impactful, tangible community action projects

You will be fighting hunger and increasing local food production. You will be empowered to become food security advocates and educators in your community. You will be a great candidate for Get Rooted if you are:

  • 16-25 years old
  • A resident of Richmond

Western Association of Food and Drug Officials (WAFDO) Scholarship – application due June 1, 2016

The Western Association of Food and Drug Officials (WAFDO) proudly continues the tradition of awarding a $2,000 scholarship to a deserving scholar enrolled in a college or university within the WAFDO region (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, British Columbia, Alberta, Guam, North Mariana Islands, Mexico). In August 2016, we will be awarding one or possibly two $2000 scholarships, depending on availability of funds.

Candidates must

  • have entered their junior or senior year in the Fall 2016;
  • be enrolled in a college or university within the WAFDO region; and
  • be pursuing education in the career fields of environmental health science, food science, drugs or pharmacology, cosmetics or medical devices.

To apply for WAFDO’s 2016 J Jos Campioni Scholarship please submit the following no later than June 1, 2016:

  1. Complete application;
  2. A one-page essay detailing your interest and personal goals in the area of public health;
  3. One copy of your official college transcript; and
  4. At least two letters of recommendation.
