2016 Summer volunteer opportunity with CEDAR

Are you interested in a volunteer opportunity this Summer? CEDAR is a two week science camp for Aboriginal Youth aged 8-12 run right here at UBC. CEDAR is a partnership between the Faculties of Science, the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, and the First Nations House of Learning. The aim of CEDAR is to provide scientific learning and cultural experiences in a fun way, promoting passion and creativity in these young learners. IdeasXChange Sustainability Forum – March 30, 2016

Call for Applications – BC Dairy Scholarships due March 31, 2016!

Dairy Industry Research and Education Committee Scholarship Terms of Reference

The British Columbia Dairy Association’s Dairy Industry Research and Education Committee (DIREC) offers up to FOUR scholarship awards ($2,500/year each) to students studying agriculture or related subjects including animal or food science, sustainability, business management, marketing, animal health and welfare, et cetera, at any accredited post-secondary institution.

Funding Objectives

To facilitate, encourage, and financially support individuals whose educational studies, projects, and programs that have been identified by the BC Dairy Association (BCDA) to benefit the BC Dairy Industry.

DIREC’s Funding Priorities include BC dairy industry sustainability, productivity, profitability, animal health and welfare, technological innovation, youth and industry development.

Funding Criteria:

DIREC invites applications from students who have successfully completed at least one year of post-secondary academic education and whose home address is in BC for a minimum of one year at the time of application (Gradschool programs also qualify).  Eligible expenses include tuition, materials and supplies required for the applicant’s period of study.

The following criteria will be evaluated. The applicant is asked to provide:

  1. An Education Plan (500 words maximum) that explains how their education will be applicable to the BC Dairy Industry upon completion, why they have an interest in this area of study, and an outline of the intended date of completion of the academic program.
  2. A list of relevant work experience, particularly related to the dairy industry (farming, allied industries, milk processing and marketing, et cetera).
  3. An official transcript from an accredited academic institution, which indicates the satisfactory completion of Year One credits in a diploma or degree program.
  4. At least one professional or academic reference letter from an individual who knows and describes the applicant’s skills, work ethic, and personal attributes.

Tec de Monterrey Internships in Sustainable Development, Mexico – apply by Apr 11

Tec de Monterrey – Internships in Sustainable Development – Mexico

Tecnológico de Monterrey (Tec) is offering 8-week Summer Internship Program on Sustainable Development in Mexico during the summer of 2016.  Students will work alongside Yale, M.I.T, Harvard, and Tec students on specific Sustainable Development projects in rural communities in southern and central Mexico.  Internship opportunities vary by site, see below for details.

Students will be placed at their choice of the following community development project sites during the summer of 2016:

Participants will learn firsthand the culture of the region, understand the values and principles governing the working and living, enjoy some of the life, flavors, and music of Mexico, and be able to identify the basis for sustainable community development in a complex and culturally rich society.

Program Logistics
The 2016 program will run from May 28 to July 31. Upon arrival in Mexico, students will travel to their project sites where they will receive a cultural orientation. Each student will be paired with a Mexican student from the Tec, have a faculty supervisor from the Tec’s local campuses, and live in student dormitories on campus or with local families.  A concluding session allow students to present about their projects.

Eligibility

  • UBC students from all programs are eligible
  • Intermediate or advanced knowledge of Spanish required.

Costs

  • The cost of the program is $1150 USD paid to Tec de Monterrey
  • This fee includes:
    • Registration fee
    • Housing
    • most meals (varies by site)
    • transportation within Mexico  (related to the projects)

Not included in this fee:

  • Airfare to Mexico is not included
  • Some Meals (varies by site)
  • Prospective participants should also take into account the cost of any personal travel that they might wish to undertake over the weekends during their stay in Mexico, as well as miscellaneous expenses for entertainment, snacks, etc.
  • International health insurance

Eligible UBC participants will be eligible for a Go Global Internship Award of $2000.00.

Applications are due by Monday April 11, 2016.

Required application materials include the following:

  • 1-page personal statement describing student’s personal goals for the experience, what skills or contributions you they bring to the experience, and the basis of their interest in Mexico and/or issues of sustainable development
  • Current C.V. or resume

BCIT Environmental Health Program – accepting for Sept 2016

Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) protect the quality of our air, water and food in BC and across Canada.  Salary ranges are $51,000 to $74,000 in BC. 

The BCIT Environmental Health program is a two-year program that allows you to earn a Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Health.  Once you complete our program you will be eligible to sit a national certification exam.  Upon certification, you’ll work to protect the public from health risks in important areas such as food safety, drinking water protection, air quality, pest control, noise control, housing and sanitation, land use and recreational water quality (swimming pools and beaches).  Your role will involve health education and promotion and advocating for healthy communities.

LFS Grad Reception – May 27, 2016

LFS GRAD RECEPTION

All of us in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems want to congratulate you on your graduation!  Completing your undergraduate degree is an important and significant achievement and we are very proud of you.

We know not all of you are able to attend the ceremony, but for those of you planning to participate, we invite you to join us to mark this occasion with your family and friends, along with LFS staff and faculty, at a pre-ceremony reception on Friday, May 27th from 1:00 – 3:30pm (formal programming to start at 2pm).

The Jack Poole Hall is on the second floor of the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre in the heart of campus; and a fitting place for you to officially begin your new relationship with UBC as a member of the Alumni community.
