Dole Bananas

Role in Oil:The banana I consumed was not organic, therefore it used chemicals and fertilizers that use up mass amounts of fossil fuels. The bananas were sent through a factory machine (oil) and washed to create a glistening shine. Luckily, a banana is a whole food and whole foods require far less amounts of fossil fuels because they don’t need to be further processed.

Delivery: the bananas are grown in most regions of Costa Rica. The transportation of Bananas from Costa Rica to Canada uses mass amounts of fuel and oil. I consider bananas a staple in my life, but realizing that they have to travel so far is absurd. I should look to buy bananas that are from the United States, that why the mass amounts of boat fuel are not used in the delivery (Dole,2011)

Vancouver BC to Costa Rica- 6000km. aprox.

Packaging:Typically bananas are transported via cardboard boxes. Occasionally (as seen in the video) banana bundles can be packaged in plastic bags. I have always bought my bananas bulk and have never used such packaging.

All Dole plastic bags are recyleable. Please refer to the link for further information.
