Inquiry

Home Economics is often an undervalued subject area. However, Home Economics is the only subject area that teaches students everyday skills with hands on learning. Through these tangible skills Home Economics also teaches students less tangible skills like confidence, resiliency and instills them with a growth mindset. Students today lack resiliency because they have never been given the opportunity to fail. Home Economics provides a more relaxed environment where failing is part of the learning process. Through my inquiry project I plan on encouraging and teaching resiliency and growth mindsets through reflective practice, a supportive classroom culture and showing my students that I am here to support them during their learning. In the future I plan on continuing my research into the link between creativity and growth mindsets, embodied cognition, and inquiry based learning.
