What Home Economics Has to Offer!

Home Economics is comprised of three different classes: Textiles, Foods and Nutrition, and Family Studies. Home Ec is the “only subject area that focuses on everyday life and meeting basic needs” (Smith & de Zwart, 2010, p.17).  Through Home Economics students are able to have hands on experiences that carry over to their lives in a very tangible way. They learn how to read a recipe, how to sew on a button, how to care for clothing, how to wash dishes, how to handle food safely, and skills that will make them better parents later in life (Smith & de Zwart, 2010). These are skills that are familiar and comfortable to students because they are already present in their everyday lives. This comfort allows for the development of more intangible skills; skills which are important for the new generation of learners. In Home Ec “students learn practical and critical thinking skills” (Smith & de Zwart, 2010, p.17). Through my inquiry project I plan on helping students develop the skills I was able to develop in Home Economics; confidence, resilience, growth mindsets and intrinsic motivation.
