Submit your collection to a herbarium

Once you have collected your specimens and gathered your field data, you are ready to submit your collection! If you would like to submit a specimen or collection of plants, algae, fungi and lichens to a herbarium, please contact the collections curator of the specific collection or institution at Index Herbariorum.

If you would like to donate to UBC herbarium, we have a few guidelines for what we are looking for to ensure that we keep a high standard of specimen donations to enhance our collections.

The following are guidelines to inform when preparing specimens for deposit:

  • Specimens must be in good condition including appropriate collection information. This includes documenting the taxon name, location of collection including geolocation, date collected and identified, collector(s) name, collector number, habitat, and other important collection information.
  • It is preferable to provide an electronic copy of collection information in the UBC Herbarium template. Herbarium staff can provide an updated template for formatting of collection information, which is also found on our website.
  • When possible, it is preferable for specimens to be identified to species using current taxonomic information.
