A11-Seeing>Visual Thinking> Idea

For the final assignment, I decided to use a collection of ‘doorway’ photographs I had collected on a recent trip to Europe (summer 2022) with which I have previously not done anything with.

The natural progression starts with the order the doors were encountered on my trip.

The next grouping is roughly based on color/brightness of the doors and photographs, starting with white on white and progressing to a silhouette. This was not an exact science as attention is paid to both the door color, but also the brightness of the photograph.

When starting to analyze, I note the general shape of the doorway (curved, straight). Next I was focused on the ornamentation, if any, on the doors and what style and where this was evident. but separating and examining the elements on their own I could gain a better understanding of individual techniques and how they come together.

Finally, I plotted all the doors on an x/y plot focused on ornamentation (or minimalism) and edges (or curves). Additionally, I generalized some door sketches in attempts to make the graph more immediately legible.

A9 – Smell Notes – Luke

The lovely smell of coffee walking to the beach after everyone was topped up and ready for the wet field trip. There wasn’t much to compete with the smell of coffee until it died down/we were right on the beach.

This was a sketch of the small trail bridge over the back of Lost Lagoon; which had quite a bad smell coming from it. I remember as nice as the imagery/visuals in the area were, the smell overpowered and did not make for a nice ‘space’.

A8 – Tuning in & Windplay – Luke

Tuning In

For tuning in, I chose to focus on the sounds I hear form my apartment desk. Firstly I started by graphing types of sounds and how they compare to each other in volume and duration. I was fairly abstract which allowed me to focus on the relationships between types of sounds, rather than transcribing the ‘exact’ soundscape. Next I filled in the ‘culprits’ of the sounds, or other possible culprits, and played with volume/persistence and size of drawing.

Windplay

For windplay, I made a chime out of unsold jewelry from my partners old business. The chime was fun to make, and I think looked nice but did not make much noise unless the wind was strong enough to break through the solid and make the rings individuals. The drawings try to illustrate this below.

A7 Movement – Luke A

Staircase To Wreck Beach

First Encounter, where the trail pulls you off of the road and into the forest.

Next I attempted to ‘map’ this trail/staircase using Lidar… partly for my own memory/mapping later on and partly as an experiment in Lidar iPhone mapping… My focus was on the progression of the trail, as it leads away from UBC towards Wreck Beach and the Ocean, and the associated experience and feeling with this movement.

The final four images are perspective moments in the Augmented Reality map created by my iPhone Lidar Scan (3D Scanner App). The first two perspectives show movement from inside the forested trail, outward toward the beach, focusing on the revealing of the ocean and view, and the building up of this through sound and smell. The last two images show the reverse direction and moving upward back towards the forest away from the beach. This was my natural progression during this assignment: first down, then slowly back up.

A6 Tactile Body Space – Luke A

For this assignment, I focused on textures and how they interact in a space. Usually when we are in a position to perceive a full space, especially a large space outdoors, some detail is lost in texture and feel. This experiment captures close-up textures and positions them on the surface they occupy, but at a scale large enough to perceive the full space. I experimented with shadow, as well as a 50% mash-up between photo and texture, as keeping the space recognizable was important to the exercise.

A5: Using Our Hands – Luke Allard

My partner selected this item for me to draw blindfolded. It was a great selection because it is not our item and was in storage in our rental apartment, so I was not aware of what it was (I still am not sure… weird sculpture someone left behind). Additionally, it is about 18″ tall so a little larger than what we worked with in class, making for an interesting exercise.
