2nd try (posting)

(i tried to add an introduction to my first post but it failed, so i’ll try again this time.)

Hola a todos. Me llamo Angell. I came to Canada as an international student when I was 18 (i know it’s kind of late for language learning though) & studied english and business in kwantlen college, & then I transferred to UBC to study Econ and Span in order to get a bachelor. Although not many Asian students take Span courses, i want to study it because it’s a very useful foreign language in addition to English. My first language is Mandarin, and although it’s kind of weird to learn a 3rd language through the 2nd language, it helps me a lot because Span & Engl share many similarities. This class might be the most interesting one because i like watching movies 🙂

La Venezolana…

Hola! My name is Marianne and I am a third year English Literature student. I am also very bad with computers (Ipods hate me and my computer cries at night) so this is my second attempt at posting my introduction. Perhaps I should have saved it, but us Lit students don’t anticipate errors and are too trusting of our abilities.
I was born in Venezuela in 1988 (No, I do not like Chavez), and moved here when I was 8. During highschool I went to school in Powell River, which is basically the quentisential small town, and got out right after graduation. The only thing Powell River has that’s impressive, besides an abnormally high teen pregnancy rate, is the oldest (or one of the oldest) theatres in Canada: it was built in 1913. It’s even open and running, though the chairs haven’t been replaced, which makes for an uncomfortable and numbing movie experience.
As I see the art of rhetoric in films, I am very interested in films which contain poetic and thematic elements. And as a patriotic latin person, I felt that this class would emalgate these two passions for me.
I cannot think of a Latin film I like more than Pan’s Labyrinth because of its imagery and deepness in meaning. But I have to admit that my favourite movie of all time is probably Full Metal Jacket, which is surprising for a girl especially since I can barely explain why I like it so much.
Hope to see you all in class, Chao!

Hello!

Hello everyone! my name is Yuhan and I am a fourth year student. I study both Spanish and English. I moved to Canada when I was in grade 7. I am taking Spanish because I love to travel. When I was younger, I also wanted to be a translator too. However, now I found it to be more challenging then I had thought lol. I love watching movies!

Hmm, I also go by Andie so if Yuhan is too hard to remember or pronounce, I’ll respond to Andie as well.

Cheerio!

So, this is round two with this blog. Please ignore any previous entries, they’re all from SPAN312.
My name is Rose Finn, and I’m from Portland, Oregon. I’m a creative writing major, but I’m looking into a Spanish minor, because I’ve been taking Spanish classes since I was in seventh grade, and my family is a group of JeMexicans (a phrase I coined). My dad and his siblings were all born in Mexico, and his siblings were raised there, while by the time my dad was five, his Jewish parents up and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconson. So there you have it- JewMexicans. They all speak fluent Spanish, especially my aunt who runs a bilingual school in Chicago and married an Ecuadorian.
The readings thus far are interesting, although it’s always difficult for me to sift through the academic jargon that overpowers academic articles. In my program, my initial focus was on screenplay, so I’m hoping this class will provide a whole new take on film, which already it’s shaping up that way. I found it interesting in the Monsivais reading about how Mexican cinema has been sociological rather than artistic, which would make a lot of sense, given it’s blatant social problems. I’m fascinated and intrigued with Mexican culture, though it happens to be a third world country, and there are certain malfunctions of a society that go with that title. I was in Mexico last February, and I noticed how there are virtually no regulations with workers’ compensation, when workdays are permitted to start and end, alcohol, and many other facets of society that are highly regulated in Canada and the US.

Hello…

My name is Alyssa Satterwhite.  I was born and lived most of my life in Portland, Oregon (yes, one of three Portlanders in the class…) I am a twin, which too many people seem to think is extremely interesting… asking “What is it like to be a twin?”.  Word to the wise: don’t bother asking me that question – I will simply ask you, “What is it like not to be a twin?”  I grew up with 3 siblings and many pets, particularly cats and dogs.  I enjoyed Oregon’s most beautiful coast, mountains and lakes while camping, backpacking and sailing every summer.

I work at UBC’s Centre for Intercultural Communication and I am seeking a double major  in Linguistics and Spanish. I plan to be a language teacher.  I am somewhat of a “language nut” – I love learning about languages and forms of communication, having studied not only Spanish, but Hindi, Brazilian Portuguese and American Sign Language, and learned (unabbreviated) Braille.

I learned Spanish both in school (middle/high school), where I learned grammar, and as an exchange student in Costa Rica, where I gained vocabulary and fluency.  I am still very close with my host families in Costa Rica; I have been back twice and will spend this summer there as well.  I am grateful that they are all safe and well following the earthquake on Thursday.

This is the first class on film I have taken; I am looking forward to it.  Already the discussion on Thursday, I thought, was very interesting.  It is easy for many of us to jump to conclusions (e.g. about stereotypes) and it was refreshing to have that challenged and be be exposed to a different (less judgemental, perhaps?) point of view.

Introduction

We’re supposed to introduce ourselves…and I don’t really know what to write…My name is Elena, and I’m a music and Spanish major. I guess I’m interested in cinema courses because as a musician I’ve had to analyse/study a lot of different styles of music from different cultures and look at them from different perspectives… and cinema to me is similar to music with all of the many components and layers, except that music is mostly conveyed through sound, and so is cinema, but obviously it is also really visual. Of course there are a lot of other differences, but I can see the similarities too, so on one hand, I don’t think that studying cinema will be much different from what I’m used to (though I could be wrong), but I also know that it will offer a lot of new challenges. Anyways, I guess that’s my introduction for now.
