Dictado/Dictation Quiz: Lunes 3 de octubre.

Hola a todos

This upcoming Monday we will be having a Dictado/dictation quiz which will cover Chapters 1 and 2 of the text.

The dictado will include three sections

1.  Individual words:  I will dictate to you approximately 8-10 words which you will have to write, although some of the words will be from Chapter 1-2 vocabulary there may be a couple which aren´t, but which are cognates (similar to English)  which means you need to be familiar with Spanish pronunciation and sounds.   Spelling does count in this section.

Study:  Vocab from chapters including cognates, Quia listening labs.

2.  Paragraph:  I will dictate one or two paragraphs to you in Spanish in sections.  You will need to write them out completely.

Study:  Dialogues from Chapters 1 and 2,  any activities which include paragraphs.  Quia dictado activities.

3.  Questions:  I will dictate to you several long-answer questions, you must write out the questions then answer them in your own words.

Study:  Questions in the ¿Qué dice Ud?./Para conocernos mejor sections at the end of each chapter.  Para conversar questions throughout the chapter.

The Dictado should take between 35-40 minutes, class will continue as usual afterward.

Anuncios: Lunes 26 de septiembre.

Update as of 2:30:  Class will continue today at the usual time.  We will be covering the rest of chapter 2 as well as discussing the Dictado coming up next Monday.

Hola a todos.

All of the morning ferry sailings have been canceled due to a windstorm, as such I am unable to make it to the mainland.  I´m trying to arrange a substitute for today´s class so that it will still go on. Just in case it does here are the lecture notes:

Los números 40-200

Posesión con de

As for your compositions, you can turn them in to me on Wednesday in class.  I will post an update by 3:00 today to let you know if the class is still going on.

Composición #1: Una carta a mi heroe

Hola a todos

This week we have our first Writing Assignment as follows:

Una carta a mi heroe.

Write a brief (approx 1/2 page)  fan letter to your favourite musician, actor, scientist or anyone else you respect and admire.  Introduce yourself, describing such things as where you´re from, what you study, your personality, your family, when your birthday is, your favourite season,  your favourite colour, where you work etc.   Also ask this person a couple of questions about himself and tell him something you like about him using “me gusta”

Grammar and vocabulary should incorporate most of Chapter 1 (greetings, verb “ser” and pronouns, especially) and a little of Chapter 2 (Use at least 1 -AR verb) .

Typed, double-spaced, no more than 100 words, handed into me in class on Monday the 26th.

Please Note:

All composition work submitted must be yours alone.  You are not permitted to have your work written or looked over by a Spanish speaking friend (although having me or one of your classmates look over your work beforehand is perfectly OK.)  Also,  while online dictionaries are fine, I don´t recommend using online translators.  For instructions on how to write accent marks on a computer please see the link in the blogroll.

!Bienvenidos a Español 101!

Welcome to Spanish 101. This introductory course covers basic grammar beginning with the alphabet and working our way up to this guy

Individual results may vary

The course is intended for students with no prior Spanish knowledge. Students who have taken Spanish 11 or who have some experience with the language need to get approval from the course coordinator before taking this class. Please contact Enrique Manchon emanchon@interchange.ubc.ca for more info.

The Text

We use the text ¿Cómo se dice? 9th Edition, covering chapters 1 through 6, approximately one chapter every two weeks. The text is, unfortunately, both expensive and mandatory. As we work directly from it, you need to bring it to class every session.

Because the course meets twice a week rather than three times, we tend to cover a lot more material per session than other Spanish 101 courses.  The pace of the course is faster and thus attendance and preparedness are vital if you want a good mark.

Quia Online Labs

Part of the expense of the text is due to the Quia online lab access code that comes with it. The online lab replaces the old language lab/workbook system that language courses used to use and still do in some places. Here you can do the homework assignments from the comfort of your own laptop, in your pj´s while eating a big bowl of pudding if you wish. The online lab homework is, however, part of the course and does count towards your grade. To get onto the online lab you will need the book key code that comes in a folder in your textbook.

Go onto the Quia website and create a username and password:

http://books.quia.com

Enter the book key from your folder in the space provided.

You will also be asked for a course code, it is:

MEJXGM746

If you bought a used book, you will need to pay for a book key separately. E-mail me and I will send you the instructions.  My e-mail address is bkfraser@interchange.ubc.ca

Quia activities will be posted on Wednesday evenings and will cover the material from the two sessions prior to it.  The Quia assignment will be due the following Tuesday.

The blog.

This blog will be used to post lecture notes ahead of time. I post them in powerpoint or pdf format, usually the morning of or the day before the lecture. At times I will also use it to post items of interest (songs, videos etc.). Finally I will also post any announcements such as upcoming exams or assignments, as well as potential class cancellations or delays due to ferry problems.  As I commute to UBC from Victoria, there may be occasions where a class is canceled at the last minute due to problems with BC Ferries such as inclement weather.  In that case a notice will be posted on the blog by noon of the same day.

Day 1.

Tomorrow is our first session and we will begin right with Chapter 1 of the text. Please have your text in hand by then. Here are the lessons we are going to be working on:

Greetings

Office Hours

I am on Campus Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00-5:00 pm, and thus can meet with you if you need help or have any questions.  Please send me an e-mail to make an appointment.   Because of my commute I am unable to meet at any other time, however students can always reach me by e-mail.
