Shona Ellis (Associate Head of Biology, Project Coordinator) has been involved in curriculum development in the Biology program over the past 10 years. With the transition to the new Biology specializations almost complete, we are now turning our attention to making sure our curriculum addresses our program learning goals as well as to develop a more effective advising system for students. The goal is help them develop the skills and tools they need to address the challenges they will meet in their futures. A number of initiatives including the sustainability pathway and flexible learning initiatives are currently on Shona’s plate. She teaches in a number of plant courses and has her students involved in activity based projects that combine lab and field/community experiences.

Ileana Costrut (Educational Programmer in Sustainability) has been involved with formal and informal sustainability education for the past 8 years. Her experience ranges from working with first year university students on sustainability issues in their residences, coordinating a community service learning course, assisting and coordinating the UBC course SUST 101, to coordinating the Biology Sustainability Pathway project. Her MA thesis explored how three teachers incorporated the Landed Learning Project at the UBC Farm into their curricula. When she’s not learning about sustainability education, she loves to hike, learn about the local ecology and see the world from the back of her metal horse (bike).
