The Picture of Balance

What do you think of when you think of balance? Do you picture a scale with two items on each side? Maybe the yin and yan symbol? Two kids on a see-saw? Or maybe a person trying to walk on a balance beam? I think of my agenda, filled with multicoloured post-it notes and ink-bleeding pages.

Balance is profoundly important to us. By maintaining balance in all aspects of our lives, (some include work, school, religion, family, friendships, love, etc), we are able to feel a sense of fulfillment and harmony. According to Canadian Mental Health Association, a moderate amount of stress can benefit, if not enhance, our mental strength. However, too much stress or having to juggle too much/ too little can actually harm our mental and physical health. Some signs include: 1) feeling constantly overwhelmed, 2) losing control of your life and not knowing what is going on/ what you are doing anymore, 3) feeling guilty for having to neglect certain aspects of your life over others, and 4) having trouble concentrating when you work.

One way I’ve tried to manage my balance is by utilizing an agenda. I like to use a monthly one so I can have every event, appointment, or commitment written down on one whole page. When I plan my weeks, I try to make sure that I give time to every important aspect. Work is a priority; family is a priority; social life is a priority, but having me-time is also a priority. I think by giving myself at least one day each week, (or half a day, or a couple hours) for myself, I am able to rest, relax, and recharge. It is just as important as completing other commitments, if not more.

Having balance in your life means “finding an equilibrium among all of the priorities of your life.” Although it may be difficult to achieve such balance, it is worthwhile and it is do-able. So start today, start getting organized. Maybe even get an agenda for the upcoming school year or start using those calendar apps in your phone! You are your own picture of balance.
