Harry, are u ready for it ?

At first when I look at the advertisement of HP 7. I didn’t know what it is. Excuse my ignorance since I was never a fan of Harry Potter, at least in books. However, I am a fan for Harry Potter, in the movies. Most of the movies, including avatar and previous Harry Potter movies, will try to cut out unnecessary parts of the plot and try to fit the entire story in three hours. However, since the film maker knows the popularity of the final movie of Harry Potter, he decides to split the story into two movies. Yes, it is risky, I think so too. If Part 1 the film maker would risk producing the Part 2 as promised. However, this is also what makes Harry Potter 7 so special. If the film maker can successfully make the movie lovers to anticipate the Part 2 of Harry Potter through suspense and mystery, the entire Harry Potter collection is going to be a blast. That would ensure people coming back and watch Harry Potter 7 Part 2.

It is risky , but it is worth doing it =) and everyone loves Harry Potter anyways 😀

PETA

Linking to this extremal marketing blog of PETA

Recently they started a campaign that fights for animal rights:

The following are some pictures linked from Tree Hugger

These celebrities have devoted their naked body for PETA and fight for animal rights. They each have their own style, believe on how to protect and defend animal rights. For example, comedian David Cross support no hunting for animal fur. Through “wearing his own fur”, he support animals protection but also keeping a light and funny atmosphere. This marketing campaign to fight fur will have a negative impact on fur manufactures which and potentially causes a global outcry. We are living on this planet and we are not alone. It is impossible to survive by our own race, humans. So we need to learn how to co exists with other animals. As technology becomes more sophisticated , we are occupied by our own thoughts and forget to take a step back and look at the big picture. It is indeed important to focus and become better in what we are doing, but if we don’t look around what is happening around us, we are going to be the next specie in danger. By saving other animals and saving the planet, we also save ourselves. These marketing campaign raises awareness for the greater good and should deserve more awareness then just a post in Tree Hugger or UBC Blog site.

We always complain that we don’t have enough time, but we never take the time to lean back and see what is really happening to us. Lean back, and you will see more today.

Bravia=)

After reading Micheal’s post on Bravia, the colors have inspired me. I attached the youtube video for convenience:

Color , like no other. SONY.

I agree with Micheal that this is a very cool ad. My attention is immediately caught at the split second when the music starts. I focused my tired mind and watch the ad completely without any sort of distraction. The slogan and the brand name really sunk into my head. Even though i realize the computer graphics are not as realistic as I think, I liked the idea of the ad. It is so surprising, yet so relaxing. The ad is not aggressive at all, like forcing you to buy the company’s product. It is simply having fun with its 30 seconds time on TV (youtube in this case). I wished that I could explain the success of this ad in marketing terms. I only know that it gives me the feeling of childhood. When the colors are bright. Maybe this is also considered to be value creating in the consumer’s mind. Effortlessly placing the image of childhood fun on to the TV Bravia. This is an excellent ad.

BRAVO! BRAVIA ! =)

SAW 3D -Never ending story

YouTube Preview Image

This is a never ending story. Last time i thought SAW was already over. I thought the main character is already dead and the story is over. In terms of marketing terms, they pushed the product cycle back from Decline to Growth. They are not in the introduction stage because people already know about SAW.

The demand for SAW has increased due to the increase in benefits in the new SAW 3D movie. Well, obviously, it is 3D. But in the story (plot line), the murder kills people in the public now. It is also considered to be a benefit, because it increases the excitement which is the feeling people expect in a horror movie.

Now, we are going to see another wave of SAW , this coming Halloween

Translink

do you know that we are going to get a smart card? Do you know how to use a smart card ? Do you know what is a smart card?

If you went to Hong Kong or London or Boston, you probably have heard of these words: Octopus card, Oyster card, and Charlie card. A smart card is like a debit card that you can put money in through 7-11, Shopping mall, or even online. We, metro-vancouver, are going to get our own smart card and we get a chance to name it. I already named it the Eric’s Card. You should gvie some ideas too.

Enough of this introduction.

You probably haven’t heard of it right ? Because they didn’t market it hard enough. The marketing startegy of translink is a tiny 4×6 article posted on Vancouver Sun for a day. Who would know that we are getting smart card? If the citizens are more informed, does that mean they will be more readiy to involve with what is going on in the communicty?

Did government do a good job in informing us?

Kindle Amazon

Recently, I have been browsing other blogs and seeking for some ideas for this post. Finally, something has caught my eyes. Temmy, another student in Marketing 102 section, wrote a post on the new eletronic reader, Kindle. Before I read this post, I always thought Kindle was some old school eletronic reader due to it’s grey, dull and boring apperence. Comparing Kindle to its biggest compeitior, iPad, Kindle does not appeal to me in any way. Good news is Temmy found the YouTube Video on this advertisement. After watching this video, my first impression, honestly, was “it is so chessy”. Finding a beautiful girl using Kindle near the swimming pool is just linking beauty and Kindle together. The idea is so old school. However, I couldn’t get the video off my mind. To be honest, she was beautiful, but what attracted my attention was what she says. When the male asks ” how can you read under the light”, the female immediately went into advertising mode. The advertising mode totally interupted my chain of thoughts, because it was so obvious, yet she sound so natural. Her words stay in my mind for a long time. This commerical is really effective. However, I don’t understand why it is. Is it because of the element of suprise? 😀

Starcraft II

YouTube Preview ImageAccording to my knowledge, this is one of the hittest game this year, Starcraft II. But the question is why? I believe they spend a lot of time designing the game, drawing the characters, testing, playing and promoting. But why is it so sucessful ? From teenagers to adults, they all say it is great, it is fantastic. What is the magic behind this promotion campagin?

Wait. I think the key word in this marketing campagin is wait. Making the customer anticipate for the game increases the anxiety, investment and the expectation of the game. First, Billizard started promoting like one year before the game is published, gave out little video clips of starcraft and lured customer’s attention. The excitement, fun and experience that this game offers satisify the last two level of the Maslow Pyramid of Needs. Suddenly, Starcraft II becomes this “must buy game” and turns into a social bond between friends. Starcraft II is a tunnel which link friends together when they are still at home. Putting people together who has the same hobby, strategic thinking and gaming. But the key in this promotion campagin, I believe, is the ability that starcraft II can delay the release of the product which increases the anticipation and eventually the satisifaction of the product.

A Company’s responssiblitiy

As the company grows bigger, there will be more supporters, like macdonalds. However, the company will also make “enemies”, consumers that do not like the company’s product. This force that goes againt giant corporation will change the comapnies’ marketing strategy. This force will lead them to take on the social responsiblity. For instance, Mcdonalds added Salad into the menu. Some critics will say that Mcdonalds is just doing it for the money and set up an image of healthy alternatives at macdonalds. However, if this step also has benefits, it provides healthy alternatives for people who eat Mc Donalds. I always have the feeling that opposition is considered as bad , or out rageous in this society. However, without these forces, without the opossition, the company would not be movtivated to take on social responsisblity. There are always two side of things, but the utlimate goal in a society should not be just about money ,but achieve a fulfilling life.

Marketing is fun !

Using the element of surprise, the advertisement has sucessfully scared the audience.

It is black humour but it captures the attention and gets the message through.

However, if there were some catchy phases , it would ever be better.
