The map above of Tasiujarjuaq, which contains the city of Iqualuit, is part of the Nunavut Traditional Names map series currently being produced by the Inuit Heritage Trust. The initiative was created as part of the modern land claims agreement that resulted in the creation of Nunavut in 1999.

  1. Really fascinating map in terms of scales. The side panel translations are poetic and goofy ..incorporating a humility to mapping that puts former territorial maps used as legal devices (formal conventions, power +/- power for erasure) to shame in a big way. I also like that images of the elders who helped to produce it are included working to reduce the distance between the viewer and the author(s).
