Progress Report

Assignment 2.3:

Midway through our research for the final report, Assignment 2.3 required us to write a progress report in the form of a memorandum, detailing our plan for research and writing. This report also includes a poll for customers of the University Village Food Court, as well as an initial letter to the business owners of the Food Court. While this data from the letter ended up being eliminated in the final report, it was a good example of an unsolicited letter of request.

Memorandum

FROM:         Andree Coschizza,

SUBJECT:   Progress Report – Recommendations for a Recycling/Waste Reduction Program at University Village Food Court

This progress report outlines the aspects of a Final Report concerning Suggestions for a Recycling/Waste Reduction Program at the University Village Food Court.

  1. Audience

The University Village Food Court (UVFC) resides in Neighbourhood D of the University Endowment Lands (UEL). The intended audience of this report is Mojan Nozari, Claire Huxtable, and Dan Johnstone, who sit on the Community Advisory Council representing Zone D. The Community Advisory Council advises the University Endowment Lands Manager (John Braman) on issues involving cost, quality and capacity of community services in the UEL.

  1. Purpose

This report serves to investigate the UFVC’s policies regarding recycling and to suggest a waste reduction system that will benefit the restaurant owners, customers, and the environment. This report will outline recommendations of alternatives for non-recyclable food containers, and recommendations for a recycling program.

  1. Significance

A recycling/waste reduction program at UVFC lies in accordance with UBC’s zero-waste initiative. UBC is hoping to divert 80% of waste from landfills by 2020, and is implementing a Zero Waste Food Ware Strategy that comes into effect September 2020 (encompassing all restaurants on UBC campus). While the Zero Waste Food Ware Strategy outlines some general alternatives for non-recyclable containers, this report will recommend a specific strategy for the University Village Food Court.

  1. Research Plan
