Is Twitter ready to fly ?

Twitter! The multi-billion social media company have announced that they would go public. For those people (like me) who have no idea what this means and how it would affect the company, u’ve come to the right blog.

What does it mean to go “public”? When a company goes public it means that they are selling their shares to the public. Anyone can buy a part of their company.

Why would a company go public? By going public the company would earn extra capital. That would mean it can use this to expand, lower interest from bank loans and credibility of the company.

Twitter is currently predicted to sell for %25-28 dollars for each stock. Compared to Facebook whose IPO was %35. Whatever the outcomes are this would make the founder of twitter extremely rich

Buy a Watch – Feed a Child

An American company named Flex watches have always maintain their goal to give back to society. For every purchase made on their products, 10% of the profit is given to provide food for children in Mexico.

“It is estimated that as much as 95% of children in the rural communities in Mexico go to school without breakfast. Without food, children don’t have the fuel they need to pay attention and learn. 250-300 children are fed a warm and nutritious meal each morning before school. As a result, students are more focused and performing better in school, thereby equipping them to be the change within their own community. The community is coming together around this kitchen and has found a safe gathering place, a warm meal & fellowship that continues to grow every day. Thanks to you, we have the ability to create a significant impact in these children’s lives. By providing them with meals + education, we are making a difference in children’s lives that will affect them forever.”

This reminded me of my TA class where Save On Meats was introduced. A thought came to my mind about how companies can benefit from giving back to the community.

Firstly, they differentiate themselves from their competitors. It is estimated that 82% of consumers consider (CSR) cooperate social responsibility before deciding where to shop or what to buy.

Secondly, employees would be more dedicated in their work. Employees who work for these type of companies share a common goal. They would want to see the company succeed so the world would become a better place. Comparing to a company whose main goal is to exploit consumers to maximise their profits.

Finally, customer loyalty. Once customers know your cause is to create a better future they would be determine to contribute.

Fuel that that will fuel tomorrow

OIL! The scarce resource that is slowly dispersing from the face of our planet. Approximately 50-100 years from now, the availability of oil will become limited thus drilling the earth to harvest would be far to expensive and time consuming.
Undoubtedly, the insufficiency of oil is a major global issue and scientists are seeking the next best alternative fuel that will fuel tomorrow.

One of the big players of oil consumption are transportation vehicles. Acal Energy, A small British firm is looking to change this by using hydrogen as fuel instead of oil. The company is currently developing a special chemical to hydrogen that would enable cars drive it safely. This would not only be cheaper than oil but also more eco-friendly. However, would hydrogen powered cars be successful? We have seen that cheaper and eco-friendly does not always mean high in sales. Take a look at the all electric cars, barely anyone drives them. It would be interesting how to see how they can market hydrogen cars in order to make it a success.

Re:Why Are So Many Athletes Promoting Junk Food? By Ali Jatoi

Ali Jatoi shines a light on Athletes promoting unhealthy food or rather “junk food”. Ali Jatoi definitely provides some insightful points about athletes and celebrities misusing their popular status to earn extra money. Shouldn’t they use their fame for good instead of evil? And is it entirely they fault?

Firstly, I would like to address the actual impact an athlete have on children. We can all imagine a typical 10 year old going nuts about a famous athlete who performs outstandingly in their area of sports. Lets say this athlete then gets caught using illegal drugs. According to Dr. Alan Kazdin, professor of psychology and child psychiatry at Yale and director of the Yale Parenting Center, he states that most young kids will “forget” the athlete or choose a new “role model”. Sure they will be disappointed but it would not have any scaring cultural impact. This however is the extreme case but it highlights the soft impact celebrities and athletes have on children. Adding on to this, shouldn’t parents monitor what children consume rather than just pointing fingers and blaming others?

Finally, I think we are simply focusing on the negative things celebrities do. There are numerous philanthropy acts that they promote. More can be found at http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/arts-culture/stories/celebrities-take-to-youtube-to-promote-their-charitable-causes.

Breaking bad breaks

Who knew meth could attract to many people. Apparently channel AMC did because Breaking bad tv series finale have just reached a new record for most viewed episode. Reaching 10.3 million views, it have surpassed previous popular episodes.

Set in Albuquerque, Breaking bad tells a story of an over qualified chemistry teacher who is suffering terminal lung cancer. In order support his family after he have passed he decides to live a double life as a drug dealer producing crystal meth.

Just after 12 hours of its release, half a million people downloaded the episode via various torrent sites. It was recorded that most of the downloads were from UK and Australia

After winning an emmy for Outstanding Drama Series 2013 and nominated for several emmys Breaking Bad came in a proud 3rd place in terms of most viewed series finale. The Sopranos and Sex and the City, whose final episode on HBO were seen by 11.9m and 10.6m respectively.

Just for fun facts, the most watched program ever recorded was 2008 Beijing Olympics reaching up to an astounding 4 billion people. To put that into perspective, there were around 6 billion people in 2008, it means 2/3 people were watching the Olympics.

Most expensive car in the world

Lamborghini have recently outdid themselves by announcing the construction of the most expensive car in the world. The extravagant Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 will be on sale for $7.9 million. Why is it so expensive you ask? This beauty will be made out of solid gold with 700 diamond encrusted seats. Unfortunately this car wont be allowed to roam the streets.

The prototype will be at the Dubai Motor Show in November and will also be heading to Abu Dhabi on its world tour.

German engineer Robert Wilhelm Gülpen (designer of the car) is expecting the Lamborghini Aventador to beat 3 Guinness Book of Records-most expensive model, most secure display case (it is made of bulletproof glass), and the most expensive Lamborghini logo.

All of this sounds crazy and excessive but Lamborghini have just grabbed themselves free advertisement from the media and a brand image that says “only the wealthy can own a Lamborghini.” It would be interesting to see what competing companies such a Ferrari and Bugatti will do next to one up Lamborghini

Business ethics

The definition of “business ethics” is the “study of proper business policies and practices regarding potentially controversial issues, such as corporate governance, insider trading, bribery, discrimination, corporate social responsibility and fiduciary responsibilities. Business ethics are often guided by law, while other times provide a basic framework that businesses may choose to follow in order to gain public acceptance.”

The topic of business ethics i am interested in is discrimination. Thailand have a huge problem with discrimination against the crippled. Businesses refuse to hire these people thus leaving them unemployed. Reason for this is due to a superstitious belief that the crippled are cursed by a demon. Many of the crippled have to beg for a living. I wonder how i can make a difference
