October 2017 Bio

Hey there.

I’m a biomedical engineering grad student and alleged Shiba Inu kidnapper (Samoyeds are next). I live in Vancouver. My google scholar profile. I wish I published more. Something I’m working to correct. My LinkedIn Profile.

Overdose detection

Outside of work (research at the Multiscale Design Lab), I am interested in prototyping an electronic solution to the fentanyl crisis in Vancouver. I used to write about efforts unto that end here. Chronologically,

  • Presentation of the problem of fentanyl overdoses.
  • How does an opioid overdose affect vital signs?
  • Chip for pulse oximetry – MAX 30100/2
  • Making the breakout and reflow soldering
  • Motivation to do what I’m trying to do.
  • Conversation with Sarah Blyth, manager of the DTES markets and a volunteer with the overdose protection society.

However, this project has grown wings of its own since I presented the problem at Hatching Health and found a wonderful team of people to work on it. We won the Faculty of Medicine Catalyst award! We also won the award of distinction at the MDDC student innovation awards, yay! In October we exhbited the device at the North American Conference of Clinical Toxicology, and we have recruited 7 engineering physics capstone students from UBC to work on the project over the next 6 months.

Electronics outreach

Fidget spinners are/were the craze of 2017. Every store had one. Hackaday, a popular website featuring projects and hacks involving electronics from all around the internet feature quite a few of them. I borrowed a few ideas from different projects to come up with a simple design of my own, with the intention of using it for a course I was teaching. More details on that here.

Food

I like cooking (as of now, also recipes in various languages can be found here) and I chronicle my idli-dosa experiences here. You can see how I go from hunting the best places to have idlis and dosas in Vancouver, to buying batter and finally to making my own. I also have an Anova sous vide tool which I am ambivalent about. It never produces great results with chicken, and I’ve never been much of a steak person. However, it does produce some great creme brulee (and pot de creme, crema catalana).

Coffee

Filter coffee cravings have been sorted thanks to a DHL care package from mum with Lakshmi Narasu coffee all the way from Rajahmundry (where I’m from). A post on filter coffee is on its way (has been since the past few months).

(November) After running out of filter coffee, I’ve moved on to making steamed milk drinks using a moka pot and a french press for the milk steaming. The microfoam in the milk is super stable, and I get all the caffeine minus any bitter/burnt/acrid notes from the moka pot.

I also brew using an aeropress at work. Accessories include the bodum burr grinder and Aesir paper filters from Eldric at Aubade coffee.
