A Spark between First Nations and BC Hyrdro

Posted by in Uncategorized

A fire has been sparked between the relationships of the government and the First Nations once again after a recent proposal. BC Hydro proposes an $8-billion Site C hydroelectric megaproject being built on the Peace River in northeastern BC. This would involve a dam along with a 1,100-megawatt hydroelectric generating station. However, this project isn’t as simple as it sounds. It creates a disastrous atmosphere to the First Nation’s habitat. The dam itself would flood 83Km of the aforementioned river, ultimately destroying farmland and the wildlife habitat. The First Nations is firmly opposed to this project simply because it generates conflicts with their home, practices and their main resource of food, fishing. However, through both perspectives, they each have their own strong opinions established. BC Hydro presented this project due to the region’s growing population. Gas, oil and mining industries would also need the clean hydroelectric. Using the PEST analysis, this project creates political, economic and social consequences. The government is facing the constant pressure applied by the First Nations to reject BC Hydro’s project. Socially and economically, our growing population would lose out on a project that can bring forth clean hydroelectric and opportunities for our community. The final decision comes upon the government.
