Day 1 (December 15)

Lesson Overview

(First Hour) This morning begins with reading the Home Page and learning about the Overview of the course. I have included a Study Guide. I assigned each of you to a Dialogue Circle (group) for the afternoon Dialogues (days 1-4). Two members of the UBC Team will assist and participate in each Dialogue Circle in the afternoon. Contact me on WhatsApp, Facebook, or email if you have any comments or questions any time during the day. I will be checking in during the day.

Each day has 3 parts: Readings, Case Study, and Dialogue Circles. Allow about 2 hours for Readings, 1 hour for Case Study, 2 hours for Dialogue.

Readings (morning)

Also this morning, we meet Paul Freire. His writings continue throughout the course. You may choose to pick a partner or small group to read with. Read your paper copies or use links below.

Case Study (midday)

Our first Case, Syria, connects with our first theme, Pedagogy of Resistance (Conflict). Browse parts of the websites below to study the case: Schools in Syria. Take notes.

Dialogue Circle (afternoon)

Find your Dialogue Circle Group; assign a Group Leader and a Note Taker. Reread description in Reading 2 regarding how to proceed. Your own experiences, the Case, and Readings will provide you with perspectives to consider: “What might be the experience of the teacher in a school in Aleppo, Syria?”  Our UBC Team created short videos of our dialogues as examples. Contact your UBC Team Assistants on WhatsApp or Facebook when ready to begin dialogue.

Notes and Posting

Note Taker takes notes on themes, questions posed, and main points from the group. Post your notes on this course blog (under “Day 01 December 15”, under your group), or WhatsApp, or the Course Facebook. This post is worth 5 points in the course for all present during the dialogue. All of you should take a short time to take your own notes or reflections for Final Exam studying.
