Day 3 (December 17)

Lesson Overview

We will begin with 3 Readings in the morning. Two of the readings relate specifically to the Case, Cyrpus.  The 3rd Reading is a letter to you, as teacher, from Paulo Freire. Also read Case Study, Cyprus. This will take about 2 hours (10:00-12:00). The next hour before lunch (12:00 to 1:00), you will write a letter back to Freire, or to Zembylas or to Hadjiyanni (the other 2 authors). What would you like to say? Ask? Tell them? Of course we won’t send these letters, but we will read them to our group. Here is an example by Dr. Karen : Letter to Dr. Freire

Or, instead of a letter, you can write a Found Poem. That is a poem made up entirely of words from a text that you arrange poetically. You can use words from one of the Readings. See the following example by Philip Karangu Found Poem  Dr. Cynthia: Found-poem

Readings (morning)

Read paper copies or use links below. The 2 latter Readings differ somewhat on perspective. Both authors grew up in Cyprus.

Case Study (midday)

Our third case, Cyprus, connects to course second theme, Pedagogy of Freedom (Displacement). Read the Text below about the case.

Dialogue Circle (afternoon)

Gather your group; assign new group Leader and Note Taker. Each of you can read your letter or poem aloud to the group.  The Dialogue today will focus on the letters or poems, the Case, and Readings. Contact your UBC Assistants on WhatsApp or Facebook when ready to begin. Our UBC Team created short videos of our dialogues.

Notes and Posting

Note Taker takes notes on themes, questions posed, and main points of the dialogue. Post your notes on this Course Blog (under “Day 03 December 17”, under your group), or WhatsApp, or the Course Facebook. The posting is worth 5 points to each person who participated in the Dialogue. All of you should take a short time to take your own notes or reflections for Final Exam studying.
