Abstract:

Prevention has been considered the best strategy for invasive plant species management activities, especially in urban context. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the set of predictors that well explains the distribution of invasive plant species. Our project aims to (1) examine the spatial pattern of invasive plant species in four different municipalities within Metro Vancouver, and (2) test for any association between invasive plant species occurrence and socio-economic and land use factors. In order to achieve the goals, we used kernel density to examine the spatial pattern of selected invasive plants, then the regression techniques – Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) to test for any association between invasive plants occurrence and selected socio-economic and land use factors. The results suggested that the set of socio-economic and land use variables were the significant explanatory predictors which can be utilised to predict the distribution of invasive plant species in study sites, as well as other urban contexts.
