Hello everyone!

First things first – please let me know if you’re interested in having your pet featured on the ES Connected Newsletter! We are in a dire shortage of individuals nominating their pets!

In lieu of Pet of the Month, I’d like to highlight some interesting curriculum proposals heading to the Senate for final approval on 13 February.

In a convenient segue from Pet of the Month, the first is proposed by the good people at Land and Food Systems and has to do with animals!

PBI 317 (3) Welfare and Ethics of using Animals in Science

Historical and current debate, ethical perspectives, governance, and scientific understanding of experiences of animals in research.

APBI (Applied Biology) 317

Third-year course that covers the history and process of using animals in science. While there have been movements against animal testing in academia and industry a lot of people that make use of animal testing try to hide their involvement or avoid the conversation. I really like that UBC not only addresses some concerns, but has decided to create a course instructing students, future industrialists and scientists, on the welfare of the use of animals in research.

The next course on our list is actually a collection of courses proposed by the Faculty of Forestry. One of their more ambitious and famous programs is the Haida Gwaii Semester! In their newest proposal they wish to expand the program focusing on Marine Conservation.

HGSE 360 (3) Ocean People, Culture and Tradition

The relationship between the culture of the Haida people and their marine environment; and traditional and modern approaches to management of marine resources.

HGSE 361 (3): Fisheries Co-Management of the North Pacific Coast.

Concepts of fisheries co-management with a focus on the North Pacific Coast; examples of other co-management structures regionally and internationally.

HGSE 362 (3): Marine Protected Areas and Marine Spatial Planning

Key concepts in MSP and key elements inherent in MPA and MPA network design, governance, implementation, management, compliance and monitoring.

HGSE 363 (3): Applications in Marine Conservation

Exposure to field settings and research techniques in local marine environments.

HGSE 364 (3): Haida Gwaii Marine Conservation Seminar.

Key marine conservation issues, pairing broad topics with examples on Haida Gwaii to bring theory into practice.

While the HGSE program is run out of the Faculty of Forestry the things you learn in it can be applied to almost any other program at UBC. For any students looking for a way to bring some variety in their post-secondary education the HGSE program could be an interesting place to look.

Lastly, there is a course being proposed by both the Faculty of Applied Science and the Faculty of Arts.

APSC 367/POLI 371 (3) Humanitarian Engineering: Politics & Practice

A multidisciplinary study of best practice, politics and ethics associated with the application of technical solutions to humanitarian assistance within Canada and abroad; exploration of policies used in both aid and development contexts with a specific focus on the application of engineering in these efforts.

As always, let me know if you have a pet you’d like to show off to the rest of Enrolment Services or if you have any questions about Senate & Curriculum things!
