Greetings from Northern Alberta

Hi Everyone,

I am excited about taking my 7th and 8th course this term, which are both going to be on the UBC Blogs, not Connect.  There is always something new going on with the MET program, and I think that is why I am enjoying it so much.

I work in Cold Lake, AB which isn’t very cold currently, but will quickly change temperatures and make us wish these warm days were more frequent.  This term I am teaching Grade 9 Math, Science, and Health.  Unlike the rest of Alberta my class sizes are very reasonable, so I thank my lucky stars for that.

In my spare time I am a volunteer firefighter with Cold Lake Fire-Rescue, and the president of the ATA Science Council.

This summer I was able to travel to Greenland and Baffin Island, and the photo below was taken in Illulissat, Greenland.  It was an incredible opportunity with a group called Students on Ice.

Hi Rose. Nice to meet you. Greenland is a pretty amazing place, how nice to be there during the daylight period to see its true beauty. I look forward to learning with you this term. Dale

HI Shaimaa, it is nice to see you again too!
Greenland was beautiful, and I have one great story for the Canadians in the crowd. We landed in Kangerlussuaq, and I was asked to sweep the plane and make sure that none of the 85 students forgot their passports. After I clear the plane, I am approached by an elderly gentleman with a heavy french accent. He asked me if I found his hat. I had no idea who he was, and where I could have found his hat, and after about five minutes of him explaining that he will burn his head if he doesn’t have a hat, I basically tell this guy to get lost. One of my friends approaches me and says, “Stephane Dion hasn’t spoken to anyone so far on this trip, what was he asking you?”
Guess I should spend less time watching Bill Ne videos and watch the news a little more often.

It is nice to meet you! It is nice to see another ATA member working hard on an executive (I’m not the president, but I am on the Educational Technology Council exec.) Best of luck this year in your class and in your courses!

    That is funny! Poor Stephane!
I have read about ‘Students on Ice’ and have always wanted to explore the Arctic. I would definitely like to hear more about it. Jackie

    Hi Rose,
Nice to meet you – love the photo as it must have been such an amazing experience. We get icebergs here in Newfoundland but not like the ones in your photo.

    Cheers,
    Kevin
