Professional Development with Pinterest

Whoever said professional development can’t look fabulous?  Pintrest allows educators to sort through pins that are tagged with keywords relating to their desired topic, essentially cutting down the search time for new ideas. Users with exceptional taste may be followed by other users. Commenting on a pin helps to clarify its usage and contribute ideas, suggestions and pinions. Users may create boards for whatever accommodates their personal needs, yet their pins will remain searchable through keywords related to education. This means that educators who use Pinterest entirely for their own professional interests will still be contributing value to the professional development of others, unless they opt to keep their pins private.

We will ask you to make a Pinterest account a little later, but just to get acquainted with the site go to this page and browse around. Consider Pinterest as a way of organizing the vast amount of information you found to be available with Google+, and keep it in mind as you imagine what to do with the plethora of links that will be posted on your Twitter feed later on.

When Pinterest pins a website to a board, it makes a new copy of the image to accommodate the site’s unique design parameters. This is technically an infringement of copyright. A debate has ensued as to whether the re-sized thumbnails constitute “fair use”, as these images are linked to the original source and not accredited to Pinterest or its users. Responsibility for this copyright technicality, however, is passed to the user in the fine print of the Terms of Service. For this reason the social media platform has received some moderate speculation and the odd case of boycotting. While users should be aware of any legal risks involved in what seems like harmless resource sharing,  Pinterest’s terms of service does not differ greatly from that of other media sharing sites, such as YouTube (Sims, 2012).

When it comes to professional development, it’s hard to go wrong with Pinterest. The popular image-sharing site can be a valuable resource for educators looking to stay up-to-date on best practices, find new ideas, created content on softwares like best sublimation software etc and connect with other professionals. While Pinterest is often associated with personal projects and hobbies, it can be just as useful for professional development. In fact, many educators have found Pinterest to be an invaluable tool for planning lessons, finding new teaching strategies, and connecting with other professionals.

If you’re new to Pinterest, or if you’re looking for ways to use the site for professional development, here are some tips to get you started:

    1. Create a board for professional development.

When you create a board on Pinterest, you can choose to make it public or private. If you’re using Pinterest for professional development, we recommend creating a public board. This will allow other educators to follow your board and get ideas from your pins.

To get started, sign up for a free account on Pinterest.com. Once you’re logged in, click on the “+” icon in the top right corner of the screen and select “Create Board.” Give your board a name (we suggest something like “Professional Development”) and a description, then click “Create Board.”

    2. Start pinning.

Now that you’ve created a board for professional development, it’s time to start pinning. When you find an image, article, or other resource that you think would be helpful for educators, simply click on the “Pin It” button and choose the board you created for professional development.

As you start to build up your board, you’ll want to organize your pins into categories. For example, you could create a category for lesson plans, another for teaching strategies, and another for professional development resources.

    3. Follow other educators.

One of the best things about Pinterest is that it’s a great way to connect with other educators. When you follow other educators’ boards, you’ll get ideas and resources delivered right to your feed.

To find educators to follow, you can use the search bar at the top of the Pinterest homepage. Simply type in a keyword related to education (such as “teacher” or “education”), and Pinterest will provide you with a list of users to follow.

    4. Join a Pinterest group.

Another great way to connect with other educators is to join a Pinterest group. Groups are a great way to collaborate on projects, get feedback on ideas, and find new resources.

To find groups to join, again, you can use the search bar at the top of the Pinterest homepage. Simply type in a keyword related to education (such as “teacher” or “education”), and Pinterest will provide you with a list of groups to join.

    5. Use Pinterest to plan your professional development.

Pinterest can be a great tool for planning your professional development. If you’re looking for conferences to attend, webinars to watch, or books to read, Pinterest is a great place to start your search.

To find professional development resources on Pinterest, simply use the search bar at the top of the page. You can search for specific topics (such as “technology in education” or “classroom management”), or you can browse through the pins that have been tagged with the “professional development” tag.

Pinterest is a powerful tool that can be used for professional development. By following these tips, you’ll be on your way to using Pinterest to stay up-to-date on best practices, find new ideas, and connect with other professionals.
